England beat Sri Lanka by 51 runs
First win of the Super 8s - Right then, England become the first team to register two points in the Super Eights phase and take the lead in Group 2, ahead of the likes of Pakistan and New Zealand. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are the team under pressure in this group and if they falter or rain plays spoilsport in either of their remaining games, they could be heading out of the tournament. Let's now shift our focus to India, to Ahmedabad, to be precise. Super Sunday rounds off with a clash between two titans of international cricket as India take on South Africa in a Group 1 clash. That match is scheduled to start at 1.30 pm GMT and the Proteas have elected to BAT first. You can simply switch tabs and tune in to our coverage of that game. Cheers!
No demons in the pitch - England's captain, Harry Brook, says that bowling out Sri Lanka for under 100 runs is indeed a wonderful present. Feels there weren't many demons on the pitch, but the bowlers from both teams bowled really well. Highlights it was hard to time with the bat but credits the way Phil Salt played on the pitch. Admits Jos Buttler is arguably the best player in white-ball cricket, Brook feels he is lacking a bit of confidence and is not concerned about his form at all. On Will Jacks, Brook says Jacks was annoyed with the way he got out and chuckles by saying he bowls well when he is annoyed. Feels that they can play in any conditions, it's about getting a perfect start and feels they will once Jos Buttler starts firing on top.
One bad game with the bat - Sri Lanka's captain, Dasun Shanaka, says that it is very disappointing to lose like this but they did have a lot of positives with the ball. Further adds that he expected his players to bat well, which didn't happen. Reckons that the pitch was definitely on the drier side but with the lights coming into effect, it did get better. Mentions that it wasn't like the opposition bowled extremely well and it was more like the batters didn't bat up to the mark. Further applauds the bowling effort and says that they can restrict any opposition to an under-par total. Feels that it is one bad game with the bat but knows that it is not affordable in a World Cup. Ends by saying that they can still bounce back.
The two captains are now in conversation with Michael Atherton...
Let's quickly recap the first innings - After opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka came out firing with ball and had England reeling inside the Powerplay. The Lankans picked up a couple of wickets and kept the scoring rate down but it was in the middle phase that the hosts managed to put the squeeze on. Wickets at regular intervals kept pegging England back. Phil Salt, who had't gotten out of the Powerplay so far in this World Cup, managed to play a fighting knock and his 62 off 40 balls helped England get to some sort of a total. Will Jacks yet again chipped in with a crucial cameo and in the end, 146 was enough to get England over the line, that too with ease.
Player of the Match - Will Jacks gets the accolade for his brilliant all-round effort of 21 runs with the bat and then 3 for 22 with the ball. He says they are buzzing right now. Jofra Archer gave them a good start, and they managed to pick up wickets regularly. Shares that they know this ground really well, as they played a series recently. Reckons that chasing is hard at this ground with the ball turning so they were squeezing it every dot. Notes that he loves to contribute with the ball. Admits they haven't played to their best, but they are finding ways to win every match. They trust their game, play with freedom, and it's been working for them so far.
Sri Lanka's miserable outing with the bat - At the innings interval, Sri Lanka must have thought that they had the game in the bag but things turned out completely different. The approach with the bat from the top order was questionable at best and once again, we saw how much they depend on Pathum Nissanka providing those good starts. The middle order showed some fight but it wasn't anything substantial, barring that knock of 30 from the skipper, Dasun Shanaka. Sri Lanka isn't a side that is filled with all-rounders and at some point earlier in the chase, they should have thought about it. They now ave a moutain to climb if they are to make it through to the semi-finals.
England's love affair with spin continues - Since the time England have been in Sri Lanka prior to the World Cup, they have enjoyed their time with the ball and their spinners have ruled the roost to say the least. Things were set up inside the Powerplay as Jofra Archer and Will Jacks bowled 3 overs on the trot each and picked up five wickets between them, with Jacks taking a three-fer. After the Powerplay, it was all about game management and the likes of Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid did just that. Even Jamie Overton showed good prowess with the ball and picked up a wicket. Dawson and Rashid picked up two wickets each but it was the latter who got that crucial wicket of the Lankan skipper. All in all, a solid outing with the ball.
How's that for a win? England came into the Super 8s with a lot of pressure on their heads but they had a near-perfect record against Sri Lanka in T20Is over the last decade or so and that has prevailed here as well. A shocking loss for Sri Lanka, not because it is a loss but the manner of defeat is just too difficult to swallow, both for the players and the home fans.

Liam Dawson To Dushmantha Chameera OUT!
OUT! TIMBER! England can see the finishing line now. Quicker one from Liam Dawson bowled flatter as well and attacking the stumps. Oh, a leading edge and that could have been runout at either end as well. Flighted ball, drifting in. Dushmantha Chameera looks to flick but gets a leading edge back over the bowler's head. The batters run one and push for the second. The throw comes in from the deep, it misses the stumps at the bowler's end but hits the stumps at the keeper's end. Chameera does make it back in time, though.

Adil Rashid To Dasun Shanaka OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! That is a sensational piece of fielding and game awareness from Will Jacks and it is he who makes the difference for England yet again. Adil Rashid drags the length short and bowls it flatter on middle and off. Dasun Shanaka rocks back and looks to muscle the pull but ends up hitting it flat towards deep mid-wicket. Jacks is stationed there, moves to his left and takes a running catch but knows that he is going to go over the ropes. He has a look with the side eye and sees Tom Banton approaching towards him from widish long on and flicks it to him. Banton gobbles it up and this should be the final nail in the coffin for Sri Lanka.

DRINKS! It's Dasun Shanaka vs England right now. The lone man stopping England from crossing the line. Shanaka has done it numerous times before today, and the Lankan fans will hope their skipper can bail them out once again. Sri Lanka need 66 runs in 36 balls. Can Dasun Shanaka turn up and do the unthinkable?

OUT! HIT WICKET! Oopsie. It's all going wrong for Sri Lanka. DRINKS! We are witnessing madness here in Pallekelle, and it is the hosts who are having a brain fade right now. They will hope that this break brings some calm as well. The coach will emphasise building partnerships and tell the batters out in the middle to forget about the target for a moment, as the required run rate isn't that much. Will Jacks seems to be the difference-maker for England once again and has picked up 3 wickets already. This has now become a really tough chase for Sri Lanka as the likes of Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid are yet to bowl. With that said, the skipper, Dasun Shanaka, walks out to bat.

Will Jacks To Pavan Rathnayake OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND GONE! Oh, dear! Pavan Rathnayake gives the bowler the charge on the very first ball, but it goes horribly wrong for him. Two in two for Will Jacks, and the start gets even better for England. Full and around the off stump, Rathnayake jumps out of the crease and fights the angle as he swings to go down the ground to a ball leaving him. Slices it off the outer half over cover, where Tom Banton runs over his left shoulder and takes the catch. Jacks is on a hat-trick.
Two down for the Lankans in a jiffy. Pavan Rathnayake walks out to bat next.

Will Jacks To Kusal Mendis OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! The move to give Will Jacks the new ball has worked. The crowd have been silenced. Jacks pushes it through, full and on middle. Kusal steps out and looks to clip it away on the leg side with a closed bat face. The ball comes on slower than he anticipated. Mendis ends up closing the bat face early, and the ball pops back towards the bowler off a leading edge. The replays show that Jacks was starting to move towards his right after seeing Mendis close the bat face before stopping and accepting the catch around his left knee.

Jofra Archer To Pathum Nissanka OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Jamie Overton went back on the fence just before this ball, and Pathum Nissanka has picked him out. Archer serves a full ball, outside the line of the off stump. Nissanka was better off going through the off side but he opted to whip it away on the leg side. He has to drag it from outside off and he fails to get any power on the shot. Overton is looking into the sun but he moves to his left in the deep and takes a safe catch over his head. A big wicket for England.
