South Africa beat India by 7 wickets
Right then! That is it from the coverage of this enthralling Test at Wanderers. The series is levelled at 1-1 and the action now shifts to Newlands, Cape Town for the final and the deciding Test match of this series. It will commence on 11th January, 2022. Day 1 of this Test will begin at 2 pm IST (8.30 am GMT). But as all of you are aware, the buildup will begin well in advance and make sure you join us for the same. Till then, cheers and take care!
Dean Elgar, the South African skipper is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant performance with the bat. He says that there is no wrong or right way to win the game. He adds that the fundamentals of the game are important and they lacked that in the last game and this win was tough as they did the fundamentals right here. He mentions that bowlers showed a lot of character to get 20 wickets on this pitch. He mentions that it is his privilege to represent the country. He adds that his knocks can be ugly for some but it is okay to take blows and the bigger picture is to win the game of cricket. He adds that a lot of testimony should go to batters as have been preparing to build this batting unit for a long time. The conditions were difficult and he is glad that they won. Tells that Rassie van der Dussen's 40 will go a long way in his career and he showed a lot of character. He adds that they had a talk with Rabada in the dressing room and he has that attitude and fire to perform and overall it’s a team effort and getting 20 wickets is not easy. He adds that he is not sure how Cape Town surface will be and mentions that Newlands, Cape Town is his favourite ground in the world.
KL Rahul, the skipper of India, says that they wanted to win and they always want to play a good brand of cricket. Adds that he is a bit disappointed but credits South Africa for the way they batted and bowled. Tells that getting 122 on Day 4 wasn't going to be easy but the South African batters played really well. Mentions that they could have batted slightly better in the first innings and got 50-60 runs more. Adds that Shardul Thakur had a great Test match and he bowled and batted really well. Talking about Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, Rahul says that they both are world-class batters and they had team's backing. Says that Virat should be fine for the next game as he has batted a bit in the nets and has also been running around on the field. Tells that they will monitor Siraj for the next game and hopefully he will be fine for the last Test.
Stay tuned for the presentation.
The pitch at Wanderers is expected to be tricky for the batters and we witnessed that right from Day 1 as the South African bowlers dominated the proceedings and bundled out India for 202 in the first innings. The youngster, Marco Jansen was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets while it was Lord Shardul Thakur who ruled Day 2 as he picked seven wickets to restrict South Africa to 229. South Africa still managed a lead of 27 runs with useful fifties from Keegan Petersen and Bavuma. India needed their experienced duo of Pujara and Rahane to fire on Day 3 and they delivered with counter-attacking fifties and South Africa were eventually set a target of 240 to win this game. In the end, some astute batting by South Africa, led by their skipper, took them home in a tricky chase and this is a big win for this South African team that is trying to build towards a new era in their Test cricket history.
India needed 8 wickets this morning and with this pitch known to produce wickets in a cluster, India were in with a good chance. But the South African batters batted positively and never let the Indian bowlers settle. Shami did get the wicket of Rassie van der Dussen but India were denied any further breakthrough and they have finally lost a Test match at Wanderers. India will have to wait for Cape Town for their first-ever Test series victory in the rainbow nation.
South African batters showed great application on the pitch that had enough help for the bowlers to trouble the batters regularly. It was their skipper, Dean Elgar who led from the front and some useful contributions from other top-order batters have taken them to a rather comfortable victory on Day 4 here. Quite fittingly, it was the experienced pair of Elgar and Bavuma who finished things off for South Africa. This means a lot to South African cricket.
What a fascinating Test match this has been as momentum kept tilting from one team to another and finally, South Africa have trumped India to level the series here at Wanderers. They win by 7 wickets and have beaten India at the Wanderers in Test cricket for the first time.

DRINKS BREAK. Well, a look at the scorecard and you would say that South Africa are cruising. But if you have actually followed the game in the last 30 minutes or so, you would feel that anything is possible even now. India started the day poorly, giving too many freebies but the last 30 minutes have seen them getting disciplined. That resulted in the wicket of Rassie van der Dussen and almost of Bavuma too. Sunil Gavaskar on air opines that he sees players practice those tough boundary catches in warmup sessions but no fast bowler practices return catches. Adds that those must be practiced too. 59 runs needed for one team, 7 wickets required for the other. Trust us - this is not over yet. Play can technically go on till 10 pm IST (1630 GMT) but the conditions are already murky and the floodlights are switched on. Don't see this going for too long.

DROPPED! Heart-in-mouth moment for India and South Africa. But cannot blame the bowler here. Such catches either stick or they don't. Full, around off, Temba Bavuma looked to drive straight. But the ball hit a patch of grass and bounced a tad extra. Hence, it hit the higher part of the bat. As a result, Bavuma was unable to control the shot and spooned it straight back. Now, Thakur is a right-arm fast bowler and when he is running from over the wicket, the momentum takes him to the left. But the ball comes to his right. Thakur realizes it but perhaps goes a bit too early, being a bit too anxious. He maybe, anticipated the ball to come quickly but it came a tad slower. He stuck his right hand out but the ball hit his palm and dropped down.

OUT! TAKEN! Mohammed Shami gets his reward and this is a much-needed wicket for India! Beautiful bowling. When you are so consistent, there is bound to be a ball with a batsman's name on it. On a length, just short of full, outside off, Rassie van der Dussen plays at it tentatively. He is neither forward nor back and pushes at it. The ball comes in with the angle but after pitching, the ball moves away late. That squares van der Dussen up and he tries his best to follow the ball. But all he can manage is an outside edge, which goes straight into the hands of Cheteshwar Pujara at first slip. The game opens again. South Africa need 65 runs. India need 7 wickets. Game on.

Ohh...What a delivery to start! A good-length delivery angling into the off stump. Rassie van der Dussen looks to defend it but the ball beats the outside edge of his balde as it seams away quite sharply. This will be interesting.
Time for the action to begin! The lights are on, it is quite dark, perfect bowling conditions and it is Jasprit Bumrah who is going to begin. Rassie van der Dussen is on strike. Three slips and a gully in place. Here we go...
Cheteshwar Pujara is down for the chat, he says that the game is similar to 2018. Adds that it was a little more up and down at that time but this pitch has still good help. He mentions that the recent overseas success has helped them develop confidence and adds that the bowlers have always picked 20 wickets in the recent past. He reckons that Ashwin will also have a role to play on this pitch. He states that it was his game plan to score on any opportunity he gets on this pitch. He adds that losing Virat is not easy but mentions that the bench strength of this Indian team is very good and guys are ready whenever they get the opportunity.
PITCH REPORT - Morne Morkel in the pitch report says that, it will move around in the first couple of overs and batters need to rotate strike. He mentions that under lights and in overcast conditions it will be hard work for the batters.
... DAY 4, SESSION 3 …
So, we have enough time for some quality action today but will we get the result in these 34 overs? That's a big question and will be answered in a few hours time.
UPDATE - 6:31 pm IST (1.01 pm GMT) - We have some awesome news! The play is scheduled to start at 7:15 pm IST (1:45 pm GMT). 34 overs will be bowled today.  Play can go on uptill 9:30 pm IST (4:00 pm GMT), with another 30 minutes extension, weather and light permitting.
UPDATE - 6:18 pm IST (12:48 pm GMT) - Tea has been officially taken and we might well see some action in the final session of the day. Fingers crossed!
UPDATE - 6:01 pm IST (12:31 am GMT) - The rain has stopped for sure this time and it has gotten a lot brighter too! Really good news! The groundsmen are also making their way on the ground. The covers are coming off and we might get atleast two hours of play today.
UPDATE - 5:40 pm IST (12:10 pm GMT) - The rain has eased down a little at the Wanderers and we might get some action today and quite possibly even the result. But for all that, the rain has to stop completely and then this superb drainage system at the Wanderers can do its job.
UPDATE - 5:23 pm IST (11:53 am GMT) - It’s raining cats and dogs here at Wanderers and the possibility of play today are getting slimmer and slimmer. Surely, the middle session is washed out too and what was expected to be a thrilling day of Test cricket has turned out to be a rather frustrating day for cricket lovers around the world.
UPDATE - 5.00 pm IST (11:30 am GMT) - Ever thought a draw could be a possibility in this game? Well, it surely is on the cards now. Probably a very slender chance but surely is. The rain continues to come down and the forecast ahead isn’t that great too. Also, there is rain predicted on Day 5 also so you can’t rule it out.
UPDATE - 4:40 pm IST (11:10 am GMT) - The rain continues to come down! There was some optimism built in the Lunch when the covers seemed like coming off but they are back on again and we continue to hope for things to get better.
It seems like this is a season of retirement and Bhanuka Rajapaksha is the latest addition to it. Mohammad Hafeez and Ross Taylor also hung their boots from international cricket a few days back while Quinton de Kock decided to quit Test cricket. Earlier, it was Harbhajan Singh who decided to retire from all forms of cricket.
Also, if you haven't heard about it, Rajapaksha has announced retirement not sure why, to be honest as he just started playing his best cricket in recent times! He had a bad time when he made a comeback in the side last year but slowly, he was getting to his best. That really came as a surprise.
UPDATE - 4:10 pm IST (10:40 am GMT) - Let me just make that lunch taste a little better! It has gotten a lot brighter out there! The drizzle is quite light now and the Supersopper is doing its job. Not sure how far we are from some action but the brighter part may just make you feel good and also build some optimism.
UPDATE - 3:33 pm IST (10:03 am GMT) - So, that should be the end of the first session! As expected, we had no play in it! Let us hope we get some action after the break.
Really surprised they have not picked Jemimah Rodrigues! Yes, she has not played a lot of ODIs in recent times for India but we really thought she would be named in the squad especially after the form she has shown in recent times. Yes, it has been more in the shorter format but pretty sure she has the quality to adapt to the 50-over format too. Still though, there are quite a few exciting players to look at like Pooja Vastrakar who was so impressive in the Australian series. Also, Richa Ghosh who has really grown as a player and the classy Yastika Bhatia who also showed a lot of promise Down-Under. And then there is the experienced heads of Mandhana, Raj, Kaur and the ever reliable Jhulan Goswami. Really, a promising team and we expect them to do well in the World Cup.
In other news, India Women's squad for the upcoming WC has been announced. For those of you who are not aware about it, this is the full squad - Mithali Raj (C), Harmanpreet Kaur (VC), Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (WK), Sneh Rana, Jhulan Goswami, Pooja Vastrakar, Meghna Singh, Renuka Singh Thakur, Taniya Bhatia (WK), Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav.
UPDATE - 02:18 pm IST (8:48 am GMT) - We have nothing positive to update! The drizzle is still there and the waiting game continues. Seems like the waiting will go on for sometime. We assume, by assessing the conditions, we won’t be getting any play before Lunch.
FIFTY FOR Jake Lehmann! Well, you all might be wondering what have I written, we are talking about the BBL here. Jake Lehmann, the son of Darren Lehmann, has scored a fifty on his return to the Big Bash. His dad, the coach of Heat will be really happy with his son's performance but his team is in a little trouble. You can catch all the action from that game by switching tabs.
UPDATE - 1:33 pm IST (8:03 am GMT) - So, it is Bumrah who is marking his run-up. He is all set to run in and bowl the first ball of the day to Elgar! Here we go... I SO WISH I COULD HAVE WRITTEN THAT! However, it continues to RAIN! The covers are firmly placed and if it wasn't obvious, the start is delayed!
Keegan Petersen is down for the chat, he says that he is happy with his performance but would have loved to do better. He adds that he wants to make the number 3 place his own and wants to do well in the opportunities he gets. He mentions that the Indian attack is good and they had to play well throughout the game. He states that they are confident of winning this game and the first session will be crucial.
If you missed it, what a return it was for Usman Khawaja into the Test team! He marks it off with a brilliant ton! After rain played a major part on Day 1, there was hardly any on Day 2. Australia have racked up a score of over 400 and in reply, England have began decently so far. Just over 5 overs left there. You can switch tabs and catch all the action.
UPDATE - 12:52 pm IST (7:22 am GMT) - Well, the drizzle is back and so are the covers! Let us hope it passes away soon. The forecast is not all that promising though.
Let’s now talk about the weather! It was raining some time back but it has cleared now and the covers are off. It is still overcast though and the Indian bowlers might just enjoy such conditions.
South African batters have shown a lot of character so far in this innings and are just the one big or two decent partnerships away from a series-levelling win. India, on the other hand, would like to believe that they are just a wicket away from getting back in this game as we have seen wickets falling in clusters in the previous three days. The wicket of Dean Elgar holds the key here and the South African skipper would like to finish this game off for his side and protect their proud home record. India, on the other hand, are on the cusp of making history and this Indian team have snatched victory with their spirited performance on the day it matters the most quite a few times in the recent past. Can they create history by winning their first-ever Test series in the rainbow nation? Or will South Africa level the series? A critical first session coming up.
Hello and a warm welcome to Day 4 of this second Test match between South Africa and India. The equation is quite simple, India need another 8 wickets to win while South Africa need 122 runs to win this game. The match is right in the balance or one could say, slightly towards South Africa but the first hour is an important one and could define which way the game will go.
... DAY 4, SESSION 1 …
Right then, Day 4 most probably will be the last day of this Test match. Both teams will fancy their chances of winning this one and we can expect some intense and quality Test cricket as both these teams fight it out. Can India register their first-ever Test series victory on South African soil? Or will Proteas level the series with a spirited chase here? Do join us to find out. The action starts at 1.30 pm IST (8.00 am GMT) but our coverage begins well in advance. Till then, goodbye and cheers!
Earlier in the day, India riding on the twin fifties of Pujara and Rahane managed to set a target of 240 for South Africa. Rabada was impressive as he broke the backbone of the Indian middle-order with the wickets of Rahane, Pujara and Pant. But such has been the spirit of this Indian team that Vihari along with the lower order managed to take them to a formidable total. Now after yet another riveting day of Test cricket, we can still say that this match hangs right in the balance.
It was Lord Shardul Thakur who started the session with a brilliant spell and got rid of Aiden Markram. All other bowlers were quite disciplined but the breakthrough eluded them as Elgar and Keegan Petersen started building a solid partnership. But this is a Test match and you cannot keep Ashwin out of the action for long and he delivered yet again with a wicket of solid-looking Keegan Petersen. Indian bowlers failed to get any further breakthrough and will now need 8 wickets to seal this match and series on Day 4.
South Africa need 122 runs to win and have 8 wickets in hand. Captain Elgar is looking solid out there in the middle and has Rassie van der Dussen for his company. Aiden Markram and Keegan Petersen made good starts to their innings but failed to kick on. South Africa will hope that this pair continues their good work in the first session on Day 4 and if they do that South Africa are in with a great chance to win this one.

This is good umpiring. One suspects it was Marais Erasmus from the voice heard. At the end of the previous over, Rassie van der Dussen and Dean Elgar were just walking down the track and having a tap and some discussion. Neither was eager to get to his respective end. This is understandable, given the time left for the day. Suddenly, the umpire said, 'Please, gentlemen. Be ready when the field is ready'. Excellent umpiring.

DRINKS! South Africa have scored at a really good pace here. After losing Aiden Markram it looked as if the India bowlers would be able to put a lid over the run rate but Keegan Petersen have settled in really fast to support Dean Elgar in the middle. The hosts would hope the pair continues on their merry way till the remaining passage of play. India, on the flip side, know one wicket can change the trajectory of the game and will like to break this partnership which might hurt them a lot.

We are all set for the final session of Day 3! Indian players stride out to the middle. Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram also jog out to resume their innings. Shardul Thakur to start with the ball for India.
... DAY 3, SESSION 3 …
Markram and Elgar scored runs at a brisk rate for the hosts. Bumrah and Shami were operating from each end. Both the bowlers got some movement off the deck but not enough to find the outside edge. This is the time when South African batter can make a statement with the blade here. They need to take it session by session, rather than charging towards the target. India, on the flip side, would hope to pick up a couple of wickets before the Stumps on Day 3 to put their noses in front. Do join us at 1830 IST (1300 GMT) to find out how things unravel in the final session.
South Africa have started the chase positively and have made sure to remain unscathed till the Tea break. India lacked in putting any pressure with the ball and would hope to change it in the final session.
