That wraps up another rain-affected day, with the entire Day 2 lost to the weather. The forecast for Day 3, September 29th, is far more promising, and we remain hopeful for a full day of play, giving this Test enough time for all possible outcomes. Even though today's play has been called off, let's hope the conditions improve in time for a full day of action on Day 3. Given that we have lost an entire day's play, we are likely to see early starts for the remainder of the Test. You can join us well ahead of time as we build up to what could be an exciting day of Test cricket. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
Well, the inevitable news has arrived, STUMPS have been called for Day 2 without a single ball bowled. The weather forecast had hinted at heavier rain, and despite our optimism, persistent drizzle has dashed any hopes of play today. Both teams will now regroup and return on Day 3, hopefully to better conditions, with the aim of pushing for a result in the remaining days.
UPDATE - 8.16 am GMT - Not much has changed since the last update, with the drizzle continuing on and off throughout the day. Puddles have formed on the covers, which have been spread across the entire ground, and with the sun not making an appearance at all, the situation remains bleak. As optimistic as we want to be, the prospects of any play today seem slim at best. Let's hope for a positive change, but the weather isn't helping our cause at the moment.
While we await more news from Kanpur, let’s take a look at the next big ICC event, the Women's T20 World Cup, which is set to unfold from October 3, 2024, in the UAE. This exciting spectacle will feature 10 teams competing in two groups of five. Originally scheduled to be held in Bangladesh, it had to be relocated due to the political unrest in the country. As always, Australia will be a favourite, entering the tournament as the defending champions and having lifted the trophy six times in the past. The allure of women's cricket has been steadily rising, and anticipation is building for what promises to be another spectacular tournament.
In case you missed it, during a press conference before this Test, Shakib Al Hasan expressed his desire to retire from the Test format. While he mentioned that he is done with T20Is, with the World Cup being his final appearance, he hopes to play his last Test at home. Bangladesh is set to host South Africa for a two-match Test series in October, though the series is pending security clearance from Cricket South Africa due to political unrest in the country over the past couple of months. If the series gets the green light, one of Bangladesh's greatest players could bid farewell to Test cricket at the national capital, Dhaka.
With the start of this Test being gloomy and rain still in the forecast for Day 3, the outlook for the final two days is much more promising, with brighter skies and significantly improved conditions. This could give both teams just enough time to push for a decisive result. India, in particular, may press harder to force a result, making the contest even more intriguing. Bangladesh, with their capabilities, could certainly look to capitalize on any opportunity that comes their way, setting up an exciting remainder of the match!
UPDATE - 6.42 am GMT - Live visuals show the fourth umpire, Virender Sharma, having a discussion with who appears to be the chief of the ground staff. They are likely assessing the time needed to prepare the field for some play today, if and when the rain subsides. While the light has improved somewhat, the rain needs to stop completely before the ground staff can begin their work. The waiting game continues!
The day has changed, but New Zealand's fortunes do not seem to have improved. Having lost both openers before the close of play on Day 2, Day 3 has started in the worst possible fashion for the visitors, as they continue to struggle against a dominant Sri Lankan side. Starting the day at 22/2 in response to Sri Lanka's mammoth total of 602, the Kiwis have been bundled out for just 88. Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Nishan Peiris joined forces to run through the Kiwis, with Jayasuriya claiming his 8th five-wicket haul in Galle. Trailing by 514 runs, the visitors have been asked to bat again, facing an uphill battle as they look to recover in their second innings.
UPDATE - 6.05 am GMT - Live visuals show the Super Soppers rolling over the covers with the covers well intact, but with dark clouds still looming overhead, the umpires are checking the light meters, signalling that light may also be a concern. We've lost an entire session on Day 2 as Lunch is officially called. To make matters worse, it has started drizzling again. Abhinav Mukund informs us that the next official update will be at 6.40 am GMT. Although the situation doesn't look very promising at the moment, we remain optimistic that the weather will clear and allow some play to resume.
UPDATE - 5.45 am GMT - We are as happy to inform you as you are to read this - It has stopped raining! However, given the amount of rain we've had, there’s still a long way to go, and the ground staff will first need to deal with the waterlogged covers. Finally, a ray of hope and now let's hope that the weather holds up for the rest of the day.
UPDATE - 5.27 am GMT - Oh, no! The rain has returned, confirming the ground staff's cautious decision to keep the covers on in anticipation of another shower. Unfortunately, this means that any hopes of play today are dwindling. Let’s stay hopeful for a break in the weather!
While we wait for better news from Kanpur, let's take a look at why this match carries extra significance, especially considering the current standings in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table and the race to secure a spot in the top two. India, sitting at the top of the table, will be eager to get back on the field and maximize this home advantage, with a particular focus on winning this match. A draw would mean sharing points, something India will want to avoid. With their formidable home record and dominance, they will fancy their chances of making the most of this opportunity, especially with the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand on home soil.
UPDATE - 5.06 am GMT - We are hearing that both teams, who had arrived at the venue, have now returned to their hotel. Things are looking quite bleak for any sort of action today. For now, all we can do is hope for the situation to improve. Stay tuned for more news.
UPDATE - 4.42 am GMT - There's a bit of positive news as the rain has stopped in Kanpur. However, there hasn't been any movement on the ground yet, with the covers still firmly in place. It seems the ground staff believe this could be just a brief break in the rain, and another spell may be on the horizon. Let's remain hopeful for some quick progress as we await further updates!
Back to Sri Lanka, where Kamindu Mendis’s impressive 182, along with centuries from Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis, have propelled the hosts to a commanding total of 602. Batting late on Day 2, New Zealand found themselves in early trouble, losing both openers and now face a challenging situation as they look to steady the ship. With Sri Lanka in the driver’s seat, it’ll be intriguing to see how the visitors respond on Day 3. It’s nice and sunny in Galle, where the day has just begun. You can switch tabs and follow all the action as it unfolds!
Moving to England now, where the hosts, trailing 0-2 in the ODI series against their old rivals Australia, have staged a remarkable comeback to bring the series level. In a rain-affected fourth ODI at Lord's, England set a formidable total of 312 in a 39-overs-per-side contest after being put into bat. Key contributions from Ben Duckett and Harry Brook anchored the innings, but it was Liam Livingstone who stole the show with a blistering 27-ball 62, including an explosive final over where he clattered Mitchell Starc for 28 runs. In reply, Australia started brightly with a solid opening partnership, but once that 68-run stand was broken, the wheels fell off and they were eventually bowled out for 126 inside 25 overs. As neutrals, we all wanted the series to go the distance, and our prayers have been answered. The series decider is set to take place in Bristol on Sunday, September 29, where rain is likely to follow the two teams, but let’s hope for the best!
Over in the UAE, after a disappointing ODI series against Afghanistan in Sharjah, South Africa have drawn first blood in their T20I series against Ireland in Abu Dhabi. The Proteas secured a fairly dominant victory, showcasing their prowess both with bat and ball, taking an unassailable lead in the two-match series. Patrick Kruger’s impressive four-wicket haul was instrumental in restricting the Irish to 171, while the opening duo of Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks played pivotal roles in powering South Africa to a comfortable win. The second and final T20I of the series is scheduled for September 29th, Sunday, as the Proteas look to complete a clean sweep. Meanwhile, Ireland will aim to end the series on level terms and gain momentum heading into the ODI series that follows.
While we await improvements in the weather in Kanpur, let’s take a moment to recap an action-packed Friday in the cricketing world! One of the standout performances came from Sri Lanka's latest batting sensation, Kamindu Mendis, who made headlines by etching his name in the history books. He equalled the legendary Sir Don Bradman by reaching 1,000 Test runs in just 13 innings, marking the second-fewest innings taken to achieve this milestone in Test history. Only Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weekes have accomplished this feat in fewer innings, both achieving it in just 12 innings.
UPDATE - 3.36 am GMT - Live visuals show that it’s still drizzling, and the entire ground is under covers. The match officials, armed with umbrellas, are inspecting the outfield, which has taken a hit due to the incessant rains over the past day and a half. Abhinav Mukund informs us that the rain had stopped briefly earlier, and just as the ground staff began removing the covers, the rain made an unwelcome return. The match officials are now heading towards the Bangladesh camp, where the two on-field umpires are sharing their observations with head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe. Stay tuned for more updates.
UPDATE - 3.21 am GMT - We have official confirmation that the start of play on Day 2 has been delayed due to rain. It's a similar start to the day as yesterday, but remember, we did manage to get the game underway after an hour's delay. Let's hope for a repeat today, if not an earlier start. Stick around for more news.
UPDATE - 3.10 am GMT - Well, not the start any of us would have hoped for as a drizzle has settled in at Kanpur. That puts the possibility of an early start out of the picture, but let's remain optimistic that the rain will ease off soon and conditions will improve in time for play to begin at the usual time of 4 am GMT. Stay tuned for further updates!
As we gear up for Day 2, the forecast doesn’t look promising, with more rain looming on the horizon. But if we’re fortunate enough to avoid the showers, we could be in for another gripping day of Test cricket. In rain-affected Tests like this one, lost time is often made up by starting the day early, and that could be the case today, weather permitting. So, stay tuned as we bring you all the action from Kanpur!
The second session was delayed by a brief shower, but once play resumed, Ravichandran Ashwin quickly sent the Bangladesh skipper packing. Despite looking scratchy at times, Mominul hung in there alongside Mushfiqur Rahim as the light began to fade. However, just 9 overs into the session, bad light forced the players off the field, and soon after, rain dashed any hopes of further play for the day.
The action on Day 1 began after an hour's delay due to overnight rain, with Rohit Sharma electing to bowl first. Bangladesh’s openers showed some fight early on, but it wasn’t long before India’s Akash Deep made his mark, dismissing both openers with disciplined bowling. Najmul Hossain Shanto looked assured at the crease, while Mominul Haque, despite a nervy start, found a way to settle in, guiding Bangladesh to Lunch with minimal damage.
Hello and a warm welcome, folks, to Day 2 of the second Test between India and Bangladesh at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur! Day 1 was marred by rain, allowing only 35 overs of play, but both teams managed to land a few blows, setting up what promises to be a fascinating second day, provided the weather cooperates.
... DAY 2, SESSION 1 ...
Right then, India have made the most of the time they've had with the ball and will likely be the slightly happier side at the end of Day 1. However, Bangladesh have shown resilience and will be eager to continue their fight heading into Day 2. Given the time lost today, we might be in for an early start on Day 2, that is the 28th of September, although there's no official confirmation yet. Be sure to join us early as we build up to what promises to be another interesting day of Test cricket. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
The second session saw India make a breakthrough with Ravichandran Ashwin trapping Najmul Hossain Shanto in front of the stumps. Mominul Haque, however, continued to show his mettle, riding his luck while ensuring that the bad balls were punished. Alongside him, Mushfiqur Rahim adopted a cautious approach, settling in well. Just as Bangladesh looked to build momentum, bad light descended, followed closely by rain, bringing a premature end to a gripping day's play.
Earlier in the day, the game began after an hour's delay due to overnight rain, which left the outfield wet. With overcast skies overhead, Rohit Sharma had no hesitation in opting to bowl first, marking the first time in nine years that India, in a home Test, inserted the opposition into bat. However, the first session didn't quite go as planned for the hosts, as Bangladesh put up a solid resistance. Akash Deep, rewarded for his consistency with line and length, managed to dismiss both openers. Despite these early breakthroughs, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque steadied the ship, ensuring the visitors went into lunch in a better position.
Unfortunately, we don't have good news. The rain has taken full control, and STUMPS have been called for Day 1. With the weather casting uncertainty over the start of this Test match, today's outcome felt inevitable. However, despite the interruptions and delays, we've been treated to some truly competitive red-ball cricket on Day 1.
UPDATE - 9.19 am GMT - The rain shows no signs of letting up, and with conditions looking grim, you can switch tabs to catch all the action from the ongoing match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The hosts have delivered an impressive batting display, led by Dinesh Chandimal and now Kamindu Mendis.
UPDATE - 8.56 am GMT - With heavy clouds looming overhead, the drizzle has intensified into a steady downpour and the ground is now fully sealed as the covers have been firmly put in place.
UPDATE - 8.38 am GMT - Uh oh! The light has faded significantly, prompting the two umpires to converge and discuss the situation. After a brief conversation, they've decided that the conditions are no longer suitable for play, and the players are walking off the field. To be honest, this was coming as it had gradually darkened over the last few overs, with overcast skies dominating the scene. While it isn't raining at the moment, the ground staff anticipate a bout of rain is just around the corner and, as a precaution, are bringing the covers on. We managed to get 9 overs of play in since Lunch, during which Bangladesh lost their skipper, but Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim fought it out under the fading light.

Akash Deep To Mominul Haque
A very big appeal for LBW but the umpire turns it down. After a long chat with the men behind the stumps, Rohit Sharma opts to send it upstairs! Akash Deep bowls it full and gets the ball to nip in off the deck around middle and leg, Mominul Haque looks to play it across the line but plays for the angle going away and misses onto his pads and gets beaten on the inside edge. The UltraEdge shows no spike but the Ball Tracking shows the ball to be pitching marginally outside leg. India lose another review and Mominul Haque survives a scare. The hosts now have only one review remaining.

Ravichandran Ashwin To Mominul Haque
So nearly trickled back onto the stumps! Ashwin starts from around the wicket and flights it up, full and on leg, Mominul Haque looks for the sweep but the ball is too full for the shot. The ball brushes his glove and squeezes past the leg stump and through the legs of the keeper for a single.
Right then, after a 15-minute delay, we are all set for the second session to get underway. The sun is out as the two umpires and the Indian players head to the centre. India are starting with spin in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin. It will be Ashwin to Mominul Haque first up. Two slips and a short leg in place. Away we go...
UPDATE - 7.37 am GMT - While it has stopped raining, we are going to have a bit of a delay in the proceedings. The majority of the covers have been removed but the ground staff need a bit more time to mop up the outfield. The second session will commence at 7.55 am GMT. The skies have cleared up a bit and we can see some blue skies. Hopefully, the good weather will hold for the rest of the day.
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
Throughout the first session, there was ample assistance for the pacers to keep them interested, but the conditions are likely to ease over the course of the next two sessions. For Shanto and Mominul, the challenge now is to start afresh after Lunch. Once they settle in, they must ensure they convert their starts into substantial scores. While the players enjoy their lunch, you can switch tabs and follow the action from Day 2 of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Galle where the hosts are piling on the runs. Be sure to join us back here at 7.40 am GMT for the start of the second session, and let's hope the rain subsides so we can have a prompt start.
Promoted to number three, Mominul Haque looked shaky at the start but managed to put the balls that beat the bat behind him. Alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto, he ensured they capitalized on run-scoring opportunities whenever they presented themselves. Both batters successfully survived LBW reviews against them, allowing Bangladesh to head into Lunch with just two wickets down.
After being inserted into bat, Bangladesh knew they were in for a challenging phase early on. The two openers managed to navigate the first half hour unscathed, showing some resilience against the Indian bowling attack. However, their troubles began as soon as Akash Deep was introduced into the attack. First, Zakir Hasan edged a low sharp catch to gully, and then India successfully managed to overturn an LBW call against Shadman Islam.
End of an eventful session of Test cricket! Bangladesh will feel they have done the hard yards and will be the happier of the two sides. On the other hand, India, despite having helpful conditions, may feel a bit disappointed to have taken only two wickets. They would have hoped for more breakthroughs given the assistance offered by the pitch for the pacers. As the drizzle intensifies, the ground staff swiftly bring the covers on in an effort to protect the entire ground.

DRINKS! What an eventful first hour of play we’ve witnessed! Following a solid start with the ball, India have made two key breakthroughs, making their decision to bowl first shine even brighter. While the pitch hasn't offered much assistance to the pacers, disciplined lines and lengths have provided opportunities to exploit. However, with the ball starting to grip and behaving in line with Kanpur's reputation, spin has been introduced earlier than expected. Bangladesh will now be looking to regroup and navigate the remainder of the session until Lunch without losing any more wickets. Mohammed Siraj comes back for a burst.

Akash Deep To Shadman Islam OUT!
OUT LBW! A big, big shout for LBW but the umpire remains unmoved! Akash Deep is pretty convinced and after having a chat with Rishabh Pant, Rohit Sharma takes the review. It looked to be going down leg from the around-the-wicket angle. With an upright seam, Akash bowls it on a good length, on middle and leg, Shadman Islam hops and shapes up to work it across the line. Gets beaten on the inside edge and wears it near the knee roll on the front pad. There is no bat involved on UltraEdge and the Ball Tracking shows three reds with the ball hitting the leg stump, much to the surprise of Rohit Sharma and Co. The on-field decision will have to be overturned and Bangladesh have now lost both their openers. Shadman Islam walks back for 24 (36) and Bangladesh are now 29/2!

Akash Deep To Zakir Hasan OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Sharp catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal! Immediate impact for Akash Deep. Akash lands it on a good length, in the channel on off from around the wicket. Zakir Hasan plays the line of the ball as he looks to defend it with a straight bat. The ball straightens off the deck and catches the outside edge. Jaiswal at gully is in really tight and he reacts quickly. Goes low to his right and grabs it. Jaiswal claims it but the umpires ask Zakir to wait as they refer it upstairs. The third umpire looks at multiple angles but the replays appear a bit blurry. He does not have conclusive evidence to suggest that the ball has been grassed. He concludes that Jaiswal has his fingers underneath the ball and OUT flashes on the big screen. Zakir goes for a 24-ball duck.
A brilliant take from Yashasvi Jaiswal low to his right. The umpires send it upstairs to just have a look if it was taken cleanly! The third umpire goes through multiple angles of footage to see if the fingers were under the ball as the catch was taken. The third umpire confirms the catch to be clean and gives it OUT!

After a brief delay, we're finally set for the action to kick off in this second Test! The umpires are making their way to the centre, while Team India gathers near the boundary ropes in a tight huddle. Rohit Sharma delivers his final pep talk, rallying the team before they disperse and take their positions on the field. Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan, the Bangladesh openers, now make their way to the crease, tasked with navigating the challenging early phase of the inning. Jasprit Bumrah has the new ball in hand and is raring to go! Let's play, says the umpire and here we go...
With the start of play just moments away, here are the revised session timings for the day. The first session will run from 5 am GMT to 7 am GMT, followed by the second session, which will commence at 7.40 am GMT and continue until 9.40 am GMT. The third and final session of the day will start at 10 am GMT and conclude at 12 pm GMT. Of course, all these timings are subject to weather and light conditions permitting. Let’s hope for uninterrupted play!
STAT ATTACK - This marks the first time since 1964 in a Kanpur Test that a team winning the toss has chosen to bowl first. Additionally, it's the first instance in nine years during a home Test where India have won the toss and opted to bowl first. Notably, the last time India inserted the opposition into bat was in 2015 during the Bengaluru Test against South Africa.
The captain of Bangladesh, Najmul Hossain Shanto says that they were looking to bat first so they are happy to have got what they wanted. Mentions that they bowled well in the first Test and it will be important for the bowlers to continue the good work. Feels that once they get in, batters need to convert starts into big scores. Reckons that it will be important how they handle the new ball. Informs that they have made two changes to the team with Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed missing out and Khaled Ahmed and Taijul Islam coming in for them.
Rohit Sharma, the skipper of India says there is little softness in the pitch and they want to make the most of it with their 3 seamers. Adds that there is a bit more grass than the regular Kanpur pitch and they want to give their bowlers a good chance to make early inroads. Talks about the positives from the last match and says the team came up on top and put in strong performances. States the importance of finding ways to win games which is what he looks for from the side. Concludes that they are going in with the same team.
Bangladesh (Playing XI) - Shadman Islam, Zakir Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto (C), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das (WK), Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam (In for Nahid Rana), Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed (In for Taskin Ahmed).
India (Unchanged Playing XI) - Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (WK), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.
TOSS - The coin goes up and lands in the favour of Rohit Sharma. India have won the toss and have opted to BOWL first.
Morne Morkel, the Indian bowling coach is in for a flash interview. He says the first week has been incredible and he has had a great welcome into the side. Adds that there are a lot of Test matches on the calendar and it's very important for him to connect with the guys and look for the ones who are tapping at the door for an opportunity and just build a good team environment. Concludes that with different sets of bowlers and different bandwidths of their experiences, he wants to try to make everybody feel at home and just learn from one another.
UPDATE - 4.06 am GMT - The match officials have relayed their observations to both camps, and we should expect an official update soon. With both sets of players having begun their warm-ups, we should not be far from some action. Here it is - the TOSS will take place at 4.30 am GMT with the first ball to be bowled at 5 am GMT. A big cheer erupts from the crowd as local hero Kuldeep Yadav makes his way to the centre. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is also out now and heads straight to inspect the pitch. Stick around as the flip of the coin and the team news is coming up shortly.
UPDATE - 3.59 am GMT - There's certainly more activity on the ground now, with nearly all the covers removed as we near the scheduled inspection. The Super Sopper is diligently working to ensure the outfield is dry, and the ground staff are making every effort to prepare the pitch and surrounding areas for play. The two on-field umpires, along with the fourth umpire, are already out there inspecting the outfield. Abhinav Mukund, on air, informs that the ground staff from both teams have made their way out to the middle and have started to put down the markers for the warm-up drills. Fingers crossed for a positive update soon!
PITCH REPORT - While we await the inspection, Murali Kartik is pitchside, providing insights about the deck. He starts by informing that it is a black soil surface, evident from its darkish appearance. Mentions that surfaces in Kanpur are traditionally low and slow with the first innings total generally on the higher side but scores tend to decrease as the game progresses. Observing the straw-coloured grass, Kartik notes that there might be some assistance for the pacers early on. Further says that historically, teams have preferred to bat first here but feels that the overcast conditions could influence the decision at the toss.
UPDATE - 3.27 am GMT - Uh oh, the match officials have assessed the conditions and believe it will take more time for the ground staff to get the field ready for play. As a result, the toss has been delayed, and an inspection is scheduled for 4 am GMT. Just a reminder, it isn't raining at the moment, and the Indian players are already out on the park, getting a feel of the conditions. Stay tuned for further updates!
UPDATE - 3.19 am GMT - A bit of a dampener to start the day. Although there's no rain currently, overcast conditions prevail, and last night's downpour has caused water to accumulate on the covers. The ground staff are hard at work, focusing on removing the excess water from the covers before they can be taken off completely. Super Soppers are in action, working to mop up the wet patches and speed up the drying process. As per Abhinav Mukund on air, the toss could be delayed, though there’s no official word just yet. Fingers crossed for a timely start!
India, meanwhile, have continued their dominance in red-ball cricket on home soil, once again demonstrating their depth and resilience in the previous match. Despite Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli not being among the runs, India's batting lineup showed its immense strength, while their bowling attack, featuring both pace and spin, was equally impressive. The balance of this side looks formidable, and it's unlikely we’ll see many changes, except perhaps the inclusion of local favourite Kuldeep Yadav, depending on the nature of the pitch. With uncertain weather looming over the first three days, it will be interesting to see if India opt for that additional spinner. As both teams vie for crucial WTC points, they'll be eager to put their best foot forward, promising yet another thrilling encounter. The anticipation builds as we await the toss and team updates, which are just around the corner!
Bangladesh entered this series with confidence, riding the wave of a 2-0 Test series triumph over Pakistan, and were expected to provide a stern challenge to India. They certainly delivered on that promise early in the first Test, rattling India by reducing them to six quick wickets. However, they couldn’t sustain the pressure, letting the game slip away and struggling to regain control. Despite the setbacks, Bangladesh, brimming with both talent and experience, will be eager to deliver a complete performance, turning promising starts into lasting impacts, something they fell short of in the previous game. All eyes will also be on Shakib Al Hasan, who will be eager to make the most of this match following his recent announcement of retirement from T20Is, as well as his decision to retire from Test cricket after the upcoming home Test series against South Africa, that remains uncertain given the pending security clearances.
Hello and welcome to Day 1 of the second and final Test match of this exciting 2-match series, where India square up against Bangladesh at the iconic Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Fresh off a commanding victory in the first Test, India will aim to replicate their all-round brilliance and secure a clean sweep with a 2-0 series win. However, Bangladesh will be eager to bounce back and deliver a much-improved performance, fighting to end the series on level terms.
... DAY 1, SESSION 1 ...
India vs Bangladesh - the rivalry continues, as the teams get ready to take on each other in the 2nd and final Test match of the series at Green Park in Kanpur. The first Test was filled with entertainment and even though Bangladesh played well in patches, India ended up winning by a huge margin and will now look to add to their already handsome WTC points tally. India are leading the WTC table and have their eyes on a third straight final appearance but they still have a few more matches to play but Rohit Sharma and co will be filled with confidence as they made light work of an upbeat Bangladesh side thanks to a sensational all-round showing by Ravichandran Ashwin. Ashwin picked up a 6th Test ton and a 37th Test five-wicket haul, going on to equal Shane Warne in terms of five-wicket hauls in Test matches but he wasn't the only one who left a mark in Chennai. Rishabh Pant who was playing his first Test in over 630 days, looked like he never left and made a stellar ton in the second innings as did Shubman Gill who redeemed himself after scoring a duck in the first innings. Ravindra Jadeja was another one who had a fine game with both bat and ball and was a major reason for India's recovery in the first innings. But it wasn't all positive for India as their two stalwarts, namely, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli flopped big time against the new ball and both of them will be itching to make amends here. Also, we might see an extra spinner play given the general nature of the surface in Kanpur which means one of Mohammed Siraj or Akash Deep might go out of the playing XI with either Axar Patel or Kuldeep Yadav coming in. Moving on to Bangladesh, they have a lot of decisions to make regarding their best playing XI for this Test with Mominul Haque struggling with the bat and Shakib Al Hasan unable to bowl at his best. The pace trio did shine in that first Test but Mehidy Hasan needs a spin partner from the other end and this might be the cue to bring in Taijul Islam. They do have options with the bat on the bench if Mominul does get benched but the two openers really need to set things up for the team upfront. Najmul Hossain Shanto, their skipper, looked their most comfortable batter in the first Test and deserved a hundred in the fourth innings but failed to get there. Bangladesh know they have a mountain to climb but there's enough experience in that side and that series win against Pakistan should give them the belief that they can turn things around. Also, there is inclement weather expected in Kanpur, at least at the start of the Test match which might force the teams to rework their strategy a bit but let's hope that we get another exciting game of Test cricket. Who are you backing for the win?
