Well then, this brings curtains on the Boxing Day Test which swung back and forth, but ultimately Australia emerged as the better side of the two. However, a lot of positives for the Indian side as well before they head to Sydney. But, a lot of key areas to address as well. So what does this mean from the World Test Championship’s perspective? India's chances have gotten thinner with this heavy defeat and now, even if they win the last Test in this WTC cycle, they will have to depend on a lot of permutations and combinations of results. For Australia, it is simple - win Sydney and they qualify for the finale easily. And in another scenario, if Australia were to lose or draw one against India, they would need at least one win in Sri Lanka to stay ahead in the race.
Well, well, aren’t you entertained? A Boxing Day Test, in Melbourne, in front of more than 350,000-odd fans across five days, anticipations were high and this match certainly delivered way more than that. A sheer display of grit, valor and courageous fightback, with no side ready to concede. This brings us to the end of the 4th Test in this Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the series in favor of Australia 2-1. However, to ensure a series victory and claim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the hosts will have to win the 5th Test. Pat Cummins the skipper of Australia is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH and receives the Johnny Mullagh medal as well for his brilliant all-round performance. He says that it was an amazing Test match and probably the best one has ever played so far. Also mentions that the crowd was amazing as well. Mentions that Marnus Labuschagne helped him out in the second innings big time and he is also happy to contribute with the bat. On Steven Smith, he says that it wasn't easy on the first day and to get above 400 was just terrific and that Smith's century really propelled them to that big score. On being asked about not declaring on the fourth day itself, Cummins reckons that they wanted to take an India victory out of the equation and that they had plenty of runs to play with. Adds that they put in a lot of hard work into their lower order batting and also worked a lot on how best to bowl to the opposition batters. Mentions that they were a bit behind the over-rate so had to bowl Travis Head. Again appreciates Smith and says that he showed how to bat on a wicket like this and was also brilliant in the field with some handy catches. Ends by saying that it is a happy dressing room and will savor this win before heading to Sydney.
The Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma starts by saying that it is pretty disappointing and they wanted to fight till the end and simply couldn't do it. Adds that it is tough to just assess the last couple of sessions and had opportunities all throughout the Test match and let Australia get away after having them 90 or so for 6 and reckons they were just not good enough. Mentions that he went back and thought about what else they could have done and that last wicket partnership from Australia cost the game a bit as well and 340 wasn't going to be gunned down and Australia bowled perfectly. Adds that they want to find ways to win games but weren't able to set the platform at the start of the chase. On Nitish Kumar Reddy's knock, Rohit says that conditions here can get tough but Reddy showed great fight and technique and reckons he has all the tools to be successful in the future. On Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit says that they know the quality he possesses and he is someone who simply wants to come out and do well for the team and he just needs a bit more support from those around him.

Travis Head now comes up for a quick chatter as well. He begins by saying that he had four and a half days off as he didn't do much with the bat. And also mentions that he is delighted to contribute with the ball. Adds that the crowd was fantastic and both teams gave it their all. On his back issue, he says he will think about it tomorrow. Reckons that there is always belief in this group to go on and get the job done and that calmness it what got them here. Travis Head joins him and says that he watched the boys bat and couldn't do much so it was nice to contribute with the ball and with the catches. A gritty partnership then followed between Jaiswal and Pant initially steadied India's ship, with Jaiswal notching up another fifty while Pant shelved his usual fireworks for measured restraint. But just when stability seemed achieved, Pant's moment of an impetuous aerial pull triggered an avalanche. Australia pounced on the opening, and India crumbled spectacularly from 121/3 to 140/7, with Jaiswal too, falling to a leg-side strangle eventually. Boland and Lyon then made short work of the tail, as Australia ruthlessly closed out the game, winning this by 184 runs.
Tiring out the Indian bowlers on the fourth day, Australia decided to bat on and build on their overnight lead. However, it was Jasprit Bumrah who did the needful and wrapped up with a 5-fer in the very second over of the fifth day. India had a mountainous task of with a total 340 to chase. Scoring remained at a snail’s pace with both openers being watchful. But, call it a lapse of concentration or poor form, Rohit perished and Cummins was quick to snag a double whammy by removing KL Rahul in the same over. Virat resisted for a brief period but couldn’t prevent himself from nicking one to the slips yet again. As a result, India’s cautious start was blown away with them reeling at 33/3 at Lunch.
Australia's second innings proved challenging as Bumrah and Siraj dominated with the ball. Only Marnus Labuschagne showed real resistance with a fifty, but the team found themselves in trouble at 91/6. However, true to their nature and fighting spirit, Australia's lower order stepped up, with Labuschagne and Cummins' partnership helping push the lead ahead. It was further solidified by the 61-run stand between Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland. India's cause wasn't helped by sub-par fielding display as they dropped three catches and a crucial no-ball from Bumrah when Lyon edged to slips.
The game's complexion changed on Moving Day when Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar mounted a remarkable recovery. Their 127-run partnership for the eighth wicket, characterized by smart cricket and determined batting, helped India avoid both the follow-on and potential embarrassment. Nathan Lyon eventually broke the stand, with India's innings ending with Australia holding a 105-run lead. Boland, Cummins, and Lyon each claimed three wickets.
India's reply began poorly with Rohit Sharma's continued poor form, but Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli rebuilt with an impressive 102-run stand. Both batters looked in control, with Jaiswal playing textbook cricket and Kohli producing his trademark elegant strokes. However, the momentum shifted dramatically after Jaiswal's run-out, followed quickly by Kohli's departure. This triggered a collapse as India slumped from 153/2 to 191/6. While Cummins produced a spectacular delivery to dismiss Rahul, India's downfall was largely self-inflicted, particularly evident in Pant's poor shot selection on a still-batting-friendly surface.

Australia showed their dominance on day one after choosing to bat first, compiling a substantial 474 runs, batting it out for nearly two days. Their top order laid a strong foundation with the top four men scoring fifties. About that Jaiswal's wicket, an interesting discussion between on-air commentators Sanjay Manjrekar and Mark Nicholas. Sanjay reckons that it was quite brave of the TV umpire, Sharfuddoula Saikat to overturn the Snicko that didn't show any spike of the ball on the glove on the way to the keeper. He further says that the front angle that was provided to the TV umpire clearly showed the deflection to which Mark Nicholas agrees. He says that there was a clear deflection as shown in the real-time replay from the front angle and the TV umpire went with that as the conclusive evidence. This is the second instance in this very series where the Snicko has come under scrutiny. Remember that KL Rahul's dismissal in the Perth Test? That became part of the heated debate as well regarding the reliability and conviction of the technology. Well, in that instance, the question was whether the spike or the sound came off the ball edging the bat first or the bat hitting the front pad. But here, it was about whether there was a deflection off the glove or the bat to which the TV umpire overturned what the technology showed.

Australia knew they needed to keep pressing early after the Lunch break but failed to break this stand early and now, they need 7 more wickets with just one session of play remaining. Mitchell Starc was seemingly stiff in this session and that was bound to happen at some point as Cummins toiled hard and beat the bat again and again, only to come out empty-handed. Nathan Lyon bowled a long spell too but just couldn't get that elusive breakthrough for his side.
India were 33/3 when Rishabh Pant came out and joined Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease post Lunch and they are now 112 and still 3 down, negotiating a whole session and doing so fairly comfortably as well. There were plenty of plays and misses at one point but hardly any edges or even getting hit on the pads for an LBW shout which also shows that this pitch has held up quite well, even on Day 5.

An immersive first session comes to an end with this. Australia are all over the Indians now and are looking as threatening and need 7 wickets to register the win in this Boxing Day Test. They have managed to get the better of the Indian top order with only Jaiswal stranded at one end. Coming into the second session, they will be aiming to get quick wickets and run through the middle order with a minimum of 65 overs left in the day. And as the old ball hasn't done much on this deck, India aims at stability from both ends to prevent embarrassment. They do have a fair bit of batting left as well. Nathan Lyon is down for a quick chat. He says that the wicket of Virat Kohli was massive and reckons that the bowling was some of the best in that session. Mentions that Cummins is right alongside Bumrah as the best in the business but the others bowled well too and mentions that it is Test cricket that is so engrossing. On his batting, he says that it is decent and hopes to play his role going ahead in this game.
Known as a compulsive strokemaker, Jaiswal showed remarkable restraint and adapted admirably to the match situation. He was joined by Virat at the crease as the Australians successfully managed to contain the scoring rate. However, Starc, who had been reintroduced into the attack after a brief spell on the sidelines, exploited Virat's known weakness with a perfectly pitched delivery, claiming his wicket just before the Lunch break and effectively reducing India to 33/3.
The Aussies went for the edges initially but didn't get much result. A change of tactics did produce some positive results for them as they aimed more at the stumps. Although the scoring remained at a snail's pace, the hosts didn't get a breakthrough for more than an hour. It was only until the patience lapsed and Cummins, who rose fantastically to the occasion, got the better of Rohit and KL Rahul in the same over.
Into the chase, India had a mountainous task to bridge 340. And with the way the Indian top order struggled in the series, eyes were on Rohit Sharma to get runs. He did get off to a watchful start. But he and Jaiswal were constantly interrogated with precise lines and lengths, especially from Starc. The ball moved and deviated both ways a fair bit, but it still looked like a good wicket to bat on as well. Rohit was solid in defense initially as Jaiswal watchfully tried to settle on the crease as well.
LUNCH, DAY 5! A session and a half, to say the least. But, Australia will be over the moon as they have got three wickets at quick intervals, including that one of Virat just at the stroke of the Lunch. And yet again, the Indian top order has failed to deliver with the three big guns falling with no impact whatsoever. The fifth and final day began with the overnight batters Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland continuing their batting stint with Australia's lead reading 333 runs. However, it didn't take long for Bumrah to wrap things up in the very second over of the day. Lyon, with 41 and Boland's 15, fairly troubled and tired the Indian bowlers, and the tourists had to toil for 20 overs to get that last wicket.
