New Delhi:

Soumya Ranjan Mishra hogged the limelight by defeating National Champion Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly in the second round of the Parsvnath International Open chess tournament. As many as 50 players maintained a clean slate by recording their second straight win and moved to 2 points. Prominent among them are Indian trio Dibyendu Barua, Sandipan Chanda, and R B Ramesh besides Pavel Kostur and Serik Temirbaev of Kazakhstan, Saidali Iuldachev and Safin Shukhrat of Uzbekistan. Mishra added Ganguly to his casualty list after the latter over stretched an equal position for a long time with his white pieces. The middle game favoured Ganguly but Mishra was quite up to the task in finding correct solutions. In the end, both ran short of time and the former paid for an oversight. The Rs. 4 lakh prize money event is played in Swiss format with 11 rounds featuring 271 contestants. (PTI)
