Double celebrations are on in Manipur. After the maiden Santosh Trophy win, a local girl has picked up gold in the Women's Boxing Championships in Turkey. MC Mary Kom won the 45 kg category and has become Manipur's latest star in a long line of sporting heroes. Kom, all of 19 years, was given a traditional welcome when she returned home. At first glance, she looks nothing like a boxer - but clearly there is power in her punch. "I look up to Mohammad Ali and Laila Ali and I want to be like them. In my state, there is Dinko Singh and Suresh Singh. Some day I want to be like them," said Kom. Kom hails from the tiny village of Kangathei in Churachandpur district of Manipur. Her proud parents recount that when she took to the sport two years, she opted to leave the village to give it her best shot. And the move paid off. "I believe I have been able to fulfill my life's mission. Now I want to further her prospects," said Ibomcha Singh, Mary's coach. But Mary is not resting on her laurels. A day after she returned, she was back in the ring. Her next target is winning gold at the next Asian Games and the Olympics. And she seems determined to repeat history.Topics mentioned in this article
