Lewis knocks out Rahman to regain title

Las Vegas:

Lennox Lewis recaptured the heavyweight world championship in dominating fashion here yesterday, knocking out Hasim Rahman in the fourth round of their title grudge match. Lewis harried Rahman with his jab through the first three rounds. At 1:29 of the fourth he sent Rahman sprawling with a right to the chin and that was it for the fighter who had shocked Lewis with a fifth-round knockout in April. "I told you he was just a freshman in the game," said Lewis, who has repeatedly called Rahman's stunning one-punch knockout in South Africa on April 22 a lucky punch. "I definitely wasn't gun-shy," added Lewis, who crowed over bringing this re-match to a swifter conclusion than their first fight. "I got him in the fourth round -- I got my one-up on him," Lewis said. Lewis recaptured the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council titles, becoming heavyweight champion for the third time in his career. The Briton improved to 39-2 with 30 victories inside the distance, and put himself in line for a lucrative match-up with former champion Mike Tyson or with the winner of next month's World Boxing Association title fight between John Ruiz and Evander Holyfield. Rahman fell to 35-3, all of his defeats coming by knock out. "He hit me with a good punch," Rahman said. "He used his jab. He was a lot more cautious, and he fought a good fight. He hit me with a good shot, and I couldn't recover." (PTI)
