The French hearts might have been broken after their Euro 2020 loss to Switzerland last night, but Frenchman Gael Monfils made sure to put on his show-off boots and put a smile on a sparse crowd that was present at Court 12. Playing his first-round singles match of Wimbledon 2021 against Australia's Christopher O'Connell, 13th seed Monfils simply floored the crowd in the third game of the second set with a ridiculous tweener to which his opponent had no answer to. Even O'Connell's compatriot Nick Kyrgios seemed impressed as he termed the winner as "filthy".

After losing the first set 6-4, Monfils retaliated strongly to take the second 6-2. It was in the second set itself that Monfils decided to surprise his opponent with a tweener.
With a break of serve in his pocket and leading 15-0 in third game, Monfils executed a rising serve to O'Connell's backhand, which the Aussie sliced it back at the center of the court just near the 'T' point.
Monfils was quick to react as he gave the serve-n-volley a classy definition with a drop shot volley between his legs.
The crowd were woken up as Monfils even gave them a celebration that followed his "filthy" antics with the racquet.
The match was suspended on Monday with the third set tied at six games to all, and is yet to resume.
Monfils had eight aces to O'Connell's none, but the Frenchman also led in the double-faults category, failing to serve correctly seven times to O'Connell's three.
