Miami:

India's Somdev Devvarman and Sania Mirza entered round 2 of the Miami ATP Masters on Thursday.

Somdev defeated World No. 47 Potito Starace in straight sets to continue his good run of form.

India's No.1 men's player registered a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 win against his higher ranked opponent, in a match that lasted just around 70 minutes.

Somdev, who is now at a career high ranking of 73 in the world, had earlier defeated Marcos Baghdatis and Xavier Malisse at BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, California and also given World No. 1 Rafael Nadal a run for his money.

Somdev now faces World No 34 Milos Raonic of Canada, who got a bye in the first round.

If Somdev does get past Raonic, he will face the winner of the match between David Ferrer and Igor Kunitsyn.

In the women's single, Sania Mirza also downed Arantxa Parra of Spain with a similar score, 6-2, 6-4, to enter the second round.

Sania, who has lost in the second round of the last three events, will now play Maria Kirilenko of Russia. Both players have met twice before and Sania has ended up winning both the matches.
