20 years as a professional tennis player & Serena Williams now has 20 Grand Slam singles titles. The 33 year old is now only the second player ever in the open era to win 20 or more singles slam titles, after Steffi Graf. Her 3rd French Open title though is a very special one. Serena had flu through the entire tournament, dropping as many as 4 sets on her way to the final.
Post the final Serena said, "I really wanted it. I wanted to win so bad. Being down from second, third, fourth round, you know, it wasn't very easy, so this is definitely probably one of my I probably topped for my most difficult time to win, but also makes me feel good that I was able to be fit and be able to win the event."
During the final against the very talented Lucie Safarova, Serena almost gave it away, but recovered just in time to clinch her 35th career Grand Slam title. Serena infact told her physiotherapist before the final that she would not be able to play, but she made it to the court and the rest as they say is history. ÂÂ
Fighting against all odds and making a comeback is something Serena knows all too well. She recovered from a career threatening injury after a cut in the foot led to blood clots in her lungs in 2011. She bounced back from that to win 7 more Grand Slam singles titles.
No wonder then, former great Steffi Graf who holds the record for the most grand slam titles for a woman in the open era feels that Serena can beat her record of 22 titles. Serena has already carved a niche for herself in women's tennis. Her performance at Roland Garros this year though has shown that she is well on her way to perhaps becoming the greatest ever.
