Santiago:

Andy Roddick defeated Nicolas Massu 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday to give the United States a 1-0 lead against Chile in the first round of the Davis Cup series.

Massu, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist in singles and doubles, was encouraged throughout the match by chanting fans. But Roddick raced through the first set before Massu settled down.

The Chilean player broke serve once in the match, in the first game of the second set. Roddick managed the same feat in each of the remaining two sets to win the match.

American John Isner and Paul Capdeville were to play in the second match.

The U.S. team is favored with No. 8-ranked Roddick, No. 32-ranked Isner and the top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan.

None of the three Chileans are ranked in the top 150. Chile's most accomplished player, Fernando Gonzalez, is sidelined with a hip injury. The No. 165-ranked Capdeville is Chile's highest-ranked player.

Jim Courier is making his debut as Davis Cup captain. As a player, he helped the U.S. team win the Davis Cup in 1992 and 1995.

On Saturday, the doubles match will feature the Bryans against Aguilar and Massu.

In reverse singles on Sunday, Roddick will play Capdeville in the first match. Isner will take on Massu in the final match of the weekend.
