Australian Open: Angelique Kerber Beats Serena Williams, Wins Maiden Grand Slam Title
Angelique Kerber overcame top seed Serena Williams in a thrilling three-set encounter on Saturday to win her maiden Grand Slam title.
The stage was set for the final of the Women's singles match between Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber. Before the match, Australian tennis legend Evonne Goolagong displayed the trophy at the Rod Laver Arena.
Kerber seized the first break of the final in the third game of the first set when Serena committed too many unforced errors to go a break down.
Serena committed a total of eight unforced errors in the first set as she struggled with her forehand. Kerber won the first set 6-4 and suddenly, the overwhelming favorite was under pressure.
Both Kerber and Serena fought it out hard in the second set, with the six-time Australian Open winner desperately hanging on as Kerber played a solid game.
Serena played with intensity and was emotional as she won each point. In the end, Kerber had a disastrous fourth game as she committed two double faults. Serena managed to break her and she won the second set 6-3.
Kerber kept her cool and she matched Serena for aggression. Both players also exchanged breaks as the match went past two hours.
Serena was down 3-5 in the final set and Kerber was serving for the match. However, the top seed managed to break the German and stay alive.
However, on the Serena serve, Kerber managed to break and seal glory as she won her maiden Grand Slam title. The final scoreline read 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in favor of the German.
This was Kerber's first win over Serena since 2012 and it denied Serena her seventh Australian Open title.
This was Kerber's maiden Grand Slam title, becoming the first German winner since Steffi Graf in 1999.
With Kerber's victory, Serena's quest for a 22nd Grand Slam title will have to wait.
