Sania Mirza is in the form of her life. After winning Australian Open women's doubles title with Martina Hingis on Friday, she just needs to win the French Open title in May-June for achieving a rare Career-Slam. But more than that it is the Rio Olympics, that the world No. 1 Indian tennis ace is gunning for. (Final in pics)
The 29-year-old Sania, who has now won three straight Grand Slams after the 2015 Wimbledon and US Open, said she is looking forward to the August 5-21 Rio Olympics.
"It would be amazing to have that (Olympics) medal. We will give everything in Rio. But there is still time for that. May be one month before the Olympics, I will plan more about it," Sania told NDTV, after the Indo-Swiss pair's 7-6 (1), 6-3 win in the final against Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.
"As of now, I am concentrating more on whatever tournament comes our way."
Sania will have Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna as the top options for pairing in mixed doubles at Rio Olympics.
Among the two, Sania faced Paes, partnering Hingis in the Australian open mixed doubles quarter-finals. Sania and partner Ivan Dodig won the match, but fell in the semifinals 5-7, 6-7 to Elena Vesnina and Bruno Soares.
Sania said it was a tough moment for her to play against her partner. "It was really emotionally draining for me. It's not easy to play against your friend, partner on one day and the very next day, you team up again. As professional tennis players we did what we could. After the match, we talked and then came out together today and won," she said.
The 2015 WTA Finals champion added that her chemistry with Hingis went beyond the court.
"We get along really well, both on and off the court. We consolidate each other's strength, and cover each others weaknesses. We truct each other on and off the court. We have come though a lot of tough situations together," Sania said.
As for her own game, Sania added that she knows the areas to work upon. "There is always room for improvement. The ground-strokes have always been my strength and I have working on my backhand of late. I am also trying to improve my serve further," she said.
