Fifth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia beat Ryan Harrison of the United States 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Malaysian Open.
Davydenko saved nine of 12 break points in the match.
Eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan also advanced, beating Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, while Philipp Petzschner of Germany defeated Mischa Zverev 7-5, 6-3. The 66th-ranked Petzschner broke Zverev's serve twice in the second set.
Also, Somdev Devvarman of India advanced by beating Russian qualifier Mikhail Ledovskikh 7-6 (5), 6-4, Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan had to retire against Albert Ramos of Spain when trailing 4-6, 6-3, 4-2, and Rik de Voest of South Africa defeated Ryan Sweeting of the United States 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
