3rd Test: Virat Kohli's India Seal Historic Series Win in Sri Lanka

Virat Kohli created history when they won a series in Sri Lanka after 22 years. The series win has ended their overseas drought and it has given Virat Kohli his first win as skipper of the Indian team.

Sri Lanka started the day at 67/3, needing a further 319 runs for victory. India tasted success early when they snapped up the wickets of Kaushal Silva (27) and Lahiru Thirimanne (12). It needed a special knock from the remaining batsmen and Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews responded.

Angelo Mathews played with tremendous composure and strung a determined partnership with Kusal Perera. Both batsmen negotiated the spinners well while they also kept Ishant Sharma at bay.

Kusal Perera notched up back to back fifties, joining his team-mate Dinesh Chandimal as the other Sri Lankan batsmen to have scored back to back fifties on debut. Chandimal had achieved this feat against South Africa in Durban in 2011 and now Perera had joined the list.

Mathews kept building and played with more confidence as the day wore on. He notched up his seventh Test century and his second against India. Kusal Perera was also batting with tremendous maturity as the Indian bowlers started getting worried.

At tea, Sri Lanka were in a great position and it looked like they had turned the tables on India. However, R Ashwin broke the 135-run stand when he had Perera caught at point when the batsman attempted a reverse sweep. India had found focus and one sensed that it was only a matter of time.

The second new ball sealed Sri Lanka's fate. Ishant Sharma sent back Mathews for 110 while the rest of the tail collapsed in a heap. India won the match by 117 runs and they sealed a series win in Sri Lanka for the first time since 1993. R Ashwin was the Man of the series with 21 wickets while Cheteshwar Pujara was the Man of the Match for his 145*.
