Olympic Committee set to discuss India ban in May
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is believed to have called a meeting with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) headed by Vijay Kumar Malhotra in May in Lausanne.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called a meeting with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) headed by Vijay Kumar Malhotra next month in Lausanne. According to sources, the meeting will be held on May 7.
Malhotra, however, said IOA officials would "first like to meet Union sports minister Jitendra Singh and discuss some of the contentious issues on which there needs to be clarification from the ministry before meeting the IOC".
Malhotra, the acting president of the IOA, is at discomfort because the Union minister wants to implement the Sports Bill that limits the age of heads of sports federations. If the Bill is implemented, 81-year-old Malhotra will cease to represent the Archery Association of India of which he is the president since 1973!
The much awaited meeting has been put off twice. The IOC suspended the IOA in December last year over its "illegal" election process.
The IOC wants to discuss a roadmap for the IOA to host fresh elections so that suspension can be lifted and India can return to the Olympic fold.
