PV Sindhu made the country proud by assuring India of a silver medal in badminton women's singles. His parents, PV Ramana and P Vijaya - both former volleyball players - were ecstatic after their daughter's commendable feat.
"She is a very calm young girl. Today my simple girl is a world star. I am so happy for her. From the age of 10 she showed tremendous interest towards badminton and today she is the first Indian player to be in an Olympics final," Ramana told NDTV.
"For 12 years, Sindhu has not missed a training session. She has struggled day and night for Rio Olympics. I pray to God to give her all the strength and stamina for the final on Friday."
Sindhu beat Japanese Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 21-10 in the women's singles semi-final and will face world No. 1 from Spain Caroline Marin for the gold medal. Till now, Saina Nehwal's bronze at the 2012 London Olympics has been India's best so far.
"Firstly, I want to congratulate Sakshi (Malik) for her bronze medal in wrestling. Coming to Sindhu, she played well in the pre-quarters and quarters and it gave us confidence that she'll win the semis. She will face Marin in the final and I believe she can defeat her," Sindhu' mother Vijaya said.
