Jitu Rai, one of India's biggest medal hopes at Rio 2016, failed to qualify for the final of the men's 50m pistol event, after finishing a disappointing 12th in the qualifying round. He scored a total of 554.ÂÂ
Rai had begun the qualifying round brightly, scoring 92 and 95 in the first two series. However, a score of 90 from Series 3 saw him drop out of top 10.
The Indian shooter bounced back with scores of 94 and 95 in Series 4 and Series 5, respectively, which saw him climb up to the fifth spot.
It all seemed to be going fine for Jitu Rai until this stage, but disaster struck in Series 6, where he could only manage a score of 88. The final series meant he finished with an overall total of 554, which was just two short of the last-placed qualifier.
Having missed out on a medal in the 10m pistol event, Rai's campaign at Rio 2016 has come to and end.
On the other hand, Jitu Rai's compatriot Prakash Nanjappa too disappointed with a 25th place finish in qualifying. His total score was 547.
