It will be a day of redemption for Jitu Rai. The Armyman, in his maiden Olympics, was not in top form in the 10m air pistol event on Day 1 of the shooting competition. He finished eighth.
Today, Jitu is expected to shoot with more hope and expectation. The 50m pistol event is his favourite and the 28-year-old won a silver in the Granada world championship in 2014. Jitu is also the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games champion and should be a medal contender.
In Granada, Jitu narrowly missed out on the gold medal to South Korean double Olympic champion and world record holder Jin Jingoh. While Jin shot a total of 192.3 over 20 shots in the finals while Jitu finished with a score of 191.1.
Pang Wei of China, also an Olympic champion, finished third while Hoang Xuan Vinh of Vietnam finished fourth to bag the last Olympic quota on offer.

The field in Rio will be almost similar to Granada. The 41-man field will also see Prakash Nanjappa in action. The 40-year-olf from Bangalore will be shooting in his first Olympics.
Nanjappa earned a quota place for Rio Olympics 2016 after finishing eighth in the finals of 50-metre air pistol event at the 2015 ISSF World Cup in Gabala, Azerbaijan.
Nanjappa clinched a bronze at the 2013 Changwon World Cup and followed it with a bronze and silver at 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, respectively. Ahead of the Summer games, he won a bronze medal in the 2016 World Cup in Korea.
