Narsingh Yadav had failed two dope tests conducted on June 25 and July 5
After two weeks of allegations, counter-allegations, police complaints, conspiracy theories, political statements and a court styled hearing that lasted six days, Narsingh Yadav has been exonerated by the National Anti Doping agency or NADA.
Here are five reasons why the Rio bound wrestler has been given a clean-chit despite him falling two dope tests just weeks ahead of the Summer Games.
1) One time use: NADA panel observed that the injection of prohibited substance appears to be just once. Had the athlete been taking the substance regularly, the second test on July 5 would have also contained the main substance in his samples, as it had in the first test that was conducted on July 25. Instead, only the long term metabolite of the main substance was found in the test conducted on July 5. The panel also believes that it is inconceivable that one time use of a banned substance would be of any significant gain to Narsingh.
2) Clean past: Narsingh went through multiple dope tests in the last few months. The NADA panel took cognisance of the fact that the wrestler had a clean past and did not test positive in any of the tests before 2nd of June.
3) Took all precautions: NADA panel was satisfied with all the precautions that Narsingh took to ensure no prohibited substance enters his body. He only ate at the SAI centre, took supplements provided only by Wrestling Federation of India or JSW foundation (his sponsors). He also regularly consulted a sports doctor who was authorised to visit the SAI centre about what to eat and what not to. Further more, he locked the room in which his supplements were kept.
4) Sabotage theory: Convinced that Narsingh took all the precautions needed, the NADA panel found that the one time injection was without his knowledge and strengthens Narsingh's claim of sabotage against him.
5) One small slip-up: During the hearing, it was learnt that Narsingh kept his amino drink (protein supplement) next to the mat of practice. The wrestler pleaded guilty that only precaution he did not take was to keep an eye on his Amino drink during practice on June 23 and 24. The NADA panel agreed that while practicing on the mat it was impossible to keep a watch on the drink and this can't be held as a failure on part of the athlete in taking utmost caution.
Narsingh Yadav, a World Championship bronze medallist, is being tagged as a medal prospect in men's freestyle 74Kg category.
