Atletico Madrid will not now move into their new stadium until the start of the 2016-17 season, the club's managing director Miguel Angel Gil Marin admitted on Wednesday.
"Our intention is to finish construction work during the 2015-16 season and officially enter our new stadium on July 1 of the same year so that we can play there in 2016-17," Gil Marin was quoted as saying by the club's official website.
Atletico had previously hoped to move into their new home in the summer of 2015.
Atletico agreed a deal back in 2008 with Madrid city council to move out of their present Vicente Calderon home in the south of the city and into a new 70,000-seat ground in the east of the Spanish capital.
The stadium, known as La Peineta, would have been the venue for the 2020 summer Olympic Games, had Madrid's candidature not been defeated by Tokyo in last weekend's IOC vote in Buenos Aires.
