Doctors have revealed that judoka Lourembam Brojeshori Devi died of excessive internal bleeding due to pregnancy complications. The 32-year-old, the first Indian woman to participate in an Olympics, died in Coimbatore on Sunday while taking part in a 10-week training camp conducted by her employers, the Central Reserve Police Force.
According to reports, Brojeshori was two months pregnant. Family sources said the judoka was unaware of her condition before joining the camp. CRPF officials said they were unaware of Brojeshori's pregnancy. The fact that she was undergoing rigorous training may have worsened her condition, a senior official was quoted as saying.
Reports quoted Dr G. Bakthavathsalam, chairman of KG Hospital where Brojeshori died, saying: "We could have saved her if she was brought a bit earlier to the hospital. She had lost a lot of blood due to internal bleeding. She was taken to the Intensive Care Unit, but it was too late."
Brojeshori participated in 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, 2002 Asian and Commonwealth Games, besides being a part of a number of international judo events. She won gold medals in the South Asian Games held in 2006 and 2010. She also won medals at national and international level.
