Olympic Stadium, Kiev

The Olympic National Sports Complex or the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine has had a record attendance of a whopping 102,000 (2-0 FC Dynamo Kiev v FC Bayern Munich on 16/03/1977). The multi-use sports facility, one of the world's largest (second largest in Eastern Europe, after the Muscovite Luzhniki Stadium) was reopened on 9 October, 2011.

The stadium has got the honour of hosting the final match of the Euro 2012. Apart from the final, it will also host four other matches. Three of these will be Group D fixtures involving Sweden, Ukraine, England and France. The fourth match would be one of the quarter-finals of the tournament.

When Ukraine got independence in 1991, the stadium got national status and was renamed to its current moniker. After 1997, the stadium went under various changes owing to UEFA guidelines and the capacity started declining. The capacity as set by UEFA for Euro 2012 stands at 60,000. The latest stadium reconstruction, from December 2008 to October 2011, saw the demolition and rebuilding of the lower tier, a new West Stand with a two-level press box or VIP seats between the two tiers and the addition of a new transparent roof.

The stadium has had various names too - the Red stadium, The Republican stadium and the Central Stadium before settling with the Olympic moniker.

FC Dynamo Kyiv has the distinction of never having to face relegation from the top-tier. The club, founded in 1927, still stands tall and has been a force to reckon with - be it as part of USSR or now Ukraine. Oleh Blokhin (1975) and Andriy Shevchenko (2004) have brought laurels as Kyivians when they received the Ballon d'Or.
