Defending champions West Indies continued their domination at the Prudential World Cup as they defeated hosts England by 92 runs in the final to win the cricket World Cup second time in a row at the same venue where they won their maiden World Cup in 1975.

Coming in to bat at number three, Vivian Richards made 138 runs and remained unbeaten till the 60th over. His innings included 11 fours and three sixes.

Collis King made a fine 86 (10 fours, three sixes) as he partnered with Richards to add 139 runs for the fifth wicket bailing West Indies out from 99/4 when they lost captain Clive Lloyd for 13. Richards was adjudged player of the final.

Replying to West Indies’ 286/9, England made a strong start as opening batsmen Geoff Boycott (57) and captain Mike Brearley (64) added 129 runs for the first wicket.

Graham Gooch made 32 runs. But following his dismissal, all the remaining English batsmen (number 5 to 11) failed to touch double-digit mark as England were bowled out for 194 runs.

Joel Garner picked 5/38 while Colin Croft impressed with 3/42 as England lost the last seven wickets for just 11 runs. (183/3 to 194)

Prior to the final, England beat New Zealand by nine runs in the first semi-final at Manchester. On the other hand, West Indies defeated Pakistan by 43 runs in the second semi-final at The Oval.
