John Daly leads by one stroke

California: Saturday saw beautiful clear skies at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco, although blustery winds made for tough conditions for the third round of the $US 7.5 million WGC-American Express Championship. Henrik Stenson moved himself into contention, six birdies with three dropped shots helping him to a fine 67. The Swede continuing his recent fine run of form - he will start on Sunday on his own in fifth place, three strokes off the lead at six-under par. Spain's Sergio Garcia also shot 67. The young Spaniard was a model of consistency on Saturday - pars on every hole on the front nine, three birdies on the back nine, and not a single shot dropped. Garcia at seven-under par heading into the final round. John Daly recovered from a dreadful start to make his way up the leaderboard. Daly, who began at six-under, had bogeyed the opening hole and double-bogeyed the 3rd, but then birdied the 4th before driving the green on the par-four 7th to set up another birdie. And two more massive blows set up an eagle on the par-five 10th. Alongside Garcia at seven-under is Tiger Woods. Woods, who is seeking an unprecedented 10th WGC individual title, endured something of a rollercoaster ride on his way to a 68. Among some typically dazzling strokes, the world number one managed to land his ball under an SUV vehicle parked in the woods, and saw a tee shot fly over the hospitality tent on the 18th. But he somehow escaped with a respectable score to leave him in a share of third with Garcia, two strokes off the lead. Two birdies and one bogey - only his third dropped shot of the week - took the leader at the halfway point, Colin Montgomerie, to the turn in 34, one-under for the round. The former European number one was unable to pick up any more shots on the back nine though, finishing with a second-successive 69 to leave him at eight-under after three rounds. And the 42-year-old Scot found himself overtaken at the top of the leaderboard by playing partner John Daly. Daly birdied the 14th and 16th to move into the lead on nine under, and negotiated a par on the difficult 18th to give him a third successive 67.
