European champion FC Barcelona could sport the name of UNICEF on its shirts next season.

Barcelona:

European champion FC Barcelona could sport the name of UNICEF on its shirts next season. Club spokesman Xavier Cambra said discussions with the United Nations children's agency are "very advanced" and that Barcelona's board hoped to settle a deal "within a few weeks". The agreement on shirt sponsorship would form part of a larger one comprising "various strategies and forms of collaboration to unify the two brands," Cambra was quoted as saying by Barcelona-based sports daily Mundo Deportivo on Wednesday. Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently announced that the Spanish team had ruled out any type of commercial sponsorship of its red-and-blue striped jersey and would instead seek to promote a humanitarian message. Barcelona, the only major European team not to wear an advertisement, has in the past negotiated with Chinese authorities to advertise the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Austrian online betting company BetandWin. Neither deal was finalised. Barcelona has just enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in its history, having won the Champions League and the Spanish league titles. (AP)
