Gelsenkirchen:

Schalke 04 regained a share of the lead of the German Bundesliga thanks to Sunday's 1-0 win over visiting Hannover 96. After their humbling reversal at the hands of Ukrainean opposition in the UEFA Cup midweek, fans and coach were expecting a backlash when Schalke 04 returned to Bundesliga action with a home fixture against Hannover 96. Schalke had the better chances, but that was only to be expected as they endeavoured to stay with Bayern Munich at the top of the league. Offensive threats With both their usual offensive threats, Ailton and Gerald Asamoah, it took Schalke until the 65th minute to forge ahead, the bustling Mike Hanke showing the way to goal. However, the strike didn't set the hosts on the way to a crushing victory. Instead, Hannover looked the more dangerous. Only the woodwork denied them a share of the points in the 90th minute, and they had other, lesser chances to cap a miserable week for the team from Gelsenkirchen. Instead though, Schalke scraped the win - and keep the pressure on Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga. Not that Felix Magath's men will be quaking after witnessing this performance. (AP)
