Santos beat Barbarense 2-0

Santos City:

Santos overwhelmed Barbarense 2-0 in their Campeonato Paulista clash on Sunday. Oswaldo de Oliveira's Santos were full of confidence when they met Barbarense, knowing that a win would propel them closer to Campeonato Paulista leaders Sao Paulo. The home side got off to a dream start when Bovio nutmegged his marker and Deivid ran through to put the ball into the back of the net. That should have been a warning to the visitors, but if it was Leandro Campos' side failed to heed it. Sluggish playBarbarense were sluggish and completely devoid of ideas, seeming content to let the home side run rings around them. In the 12th minute Deivid crossed to Robinho, who rounded the defence with a jinking run only to strike the ball wide. Eleven minutes later Robinho again ran through the defence, but aimed his shot straight at Neneca. Santos should have had a second goal in the 41st minute from a corner kick. Leonardo headed the ball down to Deivid's feet, only for the forward to send it sailing over the crossbar. The replays only made the shot look even worse. Perking upIn the second half Barbarense perked up a little, Alexandre Dorta's strike in the 66th minute at least making Mauro earn his match fee. But it was about the only time that the visitors' threatened the Santos goal. Finally, in the 85th minute, Santos got the their just rewards as Deivid added a second goal after latching on to Robinho's cross. Offside shotHowever replays showed that he may have been slightly offside. It didn't matter though, as the match wasn't close and Fernando Diniz almost scored two minutes later, only denied by a great save from Neneca. When the referee blew for the final whistle the score stood at 2-0 to Santos. The result means that Santos now overtake Mogi Mirim and are in second place with 27 points, five points behind leaders Sao Paulo. (AP)
