London:

Andriy Shevchenko scored a second-half equalizer on Tuesday to help Chelsea to a 1-1 draw with Rosenborg in the Champions League.

Miika Koppinen gave the visitors a surprise lead in the 24th minute at Stamford Bridge when he beat John Terry to Marek Sapara's cross and volleyed the ball past Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Chelsea equalized in the 52nd when Florent Malouda collected a goal kick and crossed for Shevchenko, who rose unchallenged and headed the ball in.

"They were not the problem, we were the problem," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. "Football is about goals so if we need 20 chances to score goals it is difficult to win. Maybe we need 40 chances to score two and 60 to score three."

Chelsea had the most possession early but the English team wasted good opportunities, including a shot from Michael Essien that went wide just before the Rosenborg goal.

Chelsea kept the Norwegian team pinned back, but without Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba the Blues lacked the scoring edge in front of goal.

"This was the kind of game you have to win," Mourinho said. "The kind of game you have to win at home against the weakest team in the group. So it is not a good result."

Rosenborg missed a chance to score another in the 51st when Alexander Tettey hit the ball well over the goal.

"We had a plan and were successful," Rosenborg coach Knut Torum said. "But we were lucky to get the point."

Chelsea dominated possession after Shevchenko scored but was wasteful in front of goal - Malouda and Soloman Kalou both hit the post and Joe Cole and Essien both came close.

"Chelsea had their chances and the last 20 minutes was power play from them," Torum said. "But a very big thanks to the boys. They all worked very hard. We got the point and the result we believed in ourselves."

Both teams have one point in Group B.
