Reading, England:

Reading defeated Newcastle 1-0 in the Premier League on Monday and spoiled the return of the Magpies' England striker Michael Owen.

While the focus was on Owen, who has been sidelined for 10 months with a serious knee injury, Dave Kitson scored at Madjeski Stadium for his first league goal since August and gave Reading its third straight victory.

Kitson settled a cross from Seol Ki-hyeon and scored with a right-footer in the 50th minute for his only goal since a 3-2 season-opening win over Middlesbrough.

"The whole game was a bit frantic," Reading defender Nicky Shorey said. "We needed to slow it down after we scored but they are a good team. We'll take it but we just want to finish as high as we can."

Reading is in seventh place with 54 points and in contention for a place in next season's UEFA Cup in its first Premier League season.

"It was a fantastic win and it pushes us that little bit closer," Shorey said.

It was Owen's first minutes since he ruptured a ligament in his right knee while playing against Sweden in a World Cup group game on June 20.

Owen made only his 11th start for Newcastle since moving from Real Madrid in August 2005. It was his first start since Dec. 31, 2005, when Newcastle lost 2-1 to Tottenham in the Premier League. He only played 45 minutes against Tottenham because of a broken foot. That injury kept him out until just before the World Cup.

Monday was also the first time Owen had played under Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder, who took over in February 2006. He played the entire match.

Newcastle is 12th with 42 points.
