Riding on second half goals from C.S. Sabeeth and Katsumi Yusa, Mohun Bagan carved out a 2-1 victory over Salgaocar Sports Club to fashion their maiden win in the current edition of the I-League in Kolkata on Wednesday.
Darryl Duffy pulled one back for Salgaocar at the Salt Lake Stadium game which also witnessed marching orders given to Bagan's Denson Devadas in stoppage time for earning double yellow bookings within a minute.
As a consequence of their loss, Salgaocar have now dropped to the second spot in the league standings.
After an unproductive opening session, the deadlock was broken in the 54th minute when Devadas' incisive through pass found Sabeeth free inside the box and the former India U-23 international brilliantly chipped into the net over rival goalkeeper Karanjit.
Mohun Bagan doubled their advantage 20 minutes later when Yusa slotted past Karanjit with a powerful right footer from just outside the box.
That goal looked to have sealed the win for Mohun Bagan but they gave away a penalty in the 90th minute and Duffy successfully converted from the spot to take his personal tally to six and consolidate his position as the top scorer.
After five outings Salgaocar now have 10 points, five more than Mohun Bagan.
