SIGN OFF
Thank you for joining us for another day of World Cup action! Please come back tomorrow for our coverage of Denmark vs. Australia, France vs. Peru, and Argentina vs. Croatia. Have a wonderful night!
90'
FINAL ANALYSIS
Spain earn their first win at the 2018 World Cup in a thriller of a match against an underdog Team Melli. Group B is finally starting to shake out as many predicted it would, but there is still a lot that will be possible on the third matchday. Iran still could advance with a win over Portugal, however that result will certainly not be achieved easily against the red hot Cristiano Ronaldo. A tie could also see them advance but they would need help with a Morocco victory over Spain.
90'
FINAL
The final whistle is blown in Kazan and La Roja take all three points with a 1-0 victory over Iran!
90'
DE GEA PUNCH
Omid Ebrahimi swings in a cross to the far post in what will likely be the Iranians last attack of the game, but the anchor in the back that is David De Gea charges out and connects with a powerful punch to clear the danger.
90'
STOPPAGE
The fourth official on the near sideline raises his board to indicate that we will play a total of four minutes of stoppage time. Will it be enough for the Persian Lions to find an equalizer?
90'
Yellow Card
Omid Ebrahimi (Iran)
89'
Substitution
Rodrigo (on). Diego Costa (off). (Spain)
87'
PASSING SEQUENCES
Spain are entering cruise control mode as the clock inches closer to the final whistle. Their impeccable ability to string together impressive sequences of passes in tiny pockets of space has been put on display throughout much of the last five minutes of play. Iran struggle to even get a foot on the ball, let alone dispossess La Roja.
86'
Substitution
Saman Ghoddos (on). Vahid Amiri (off). (Iran)
82'
AMIRI MEG
Vahid Amiri puts on a show on the left wing as he nutmegs Gerard Pique and flies into the area to float a pass to the far post! Iran nearly equalize when Mehdi Taremi soars above the Spanish defense to blast a header, however his effort has just a bit too much air under it and it flies out over David De Gea's cross bar for a goal kick.
79'
Substitution
Marco Asensio (on). Lucas Vazquez (off). (Spain)
79'
Yellow Card
Vahid Amiri (Iran)
78'
ISCO BLOCKED
The Iranian wall does their job on a set piece located in a dangerous area of the attacking third. Isco attempts to double Spain's lead, however his right footed shot is hammered directly into the four man wall and sent well away from the box.
74'
SUB
Carlos Queiroz elects to bring on some fresh legs in the attack as he brings out Karim Ansarifard for AZ Alkamaar's Alireza Jahanbakhsh. This season Jahanbakhsh became the first Asian born player to ever lead a major European league in scoring.
74'
Substitution
Alireza Jahanbakhsh (on). Karim Ansarifard (off). (Iran)
71'
SCRAMBLE
A corner kick delivered from the right flag by Isco leads to an absolute mad scramble on the far post after the ball bounces around haphazardly inside the six yard box. Gerard Pique stands over Ramin Rezaeian and Saeid Ezatolahi trying to pound the ball over the line while the Iranians lay on the ground awaiting help from their goalkeeper. Ultimately the ball stays out of the goal and a foul is called against Spain to bring the confusion to a stop.
71'
Substitution
Koke (on). Andres Iniesta (off). (Spain)
69'
SUB
The veteran left back Ehsan Haji Safi is taken out for Milad Mohammadi in the 69th minute of tonight's match. It appears that he will be taken out as a precaution after the knock he took in the first half.
69'
Substitution
Milad Mohammadi (on). Ehsan Haji Safi (off). (Iran)
67'
IRAN NOT BROKEN
After the shocking near goal, Team Melli still is approaching this game in the way they have since the first minute. Iran continues to sit back, defend, and looks to hit the Spanish on the break. While the momentum shifted this half, the Iranian spirit has remained constant.
63'
GOAL CALLED BACK
Iran seemed to have equalized for a few moments, however the goal is taken off the board due to an offside call it appears. A free kick was whipped in to the far post and ultimately deposited into the net by Saeid Ezatolahi, but after a long check the call on the field stands. Ezatolahi was indeed offside on the initial pass.
60'
TAREMI HEADER
Omid Ebrahimi floats a cross into the area and connects with a flying Mehdi Taremi at the far post! Taremi is able to redirect the ball goal bound with his head, however his aim is just off as he ends up missing the target by a few feet to the left of the post.
58'
EZATOLAHI CLEARANCE
Isco whips in a cross off of a free kick to the far post looking to double La Roja's lead, however Saeid Ezatolahi is in position and makes a key flicked headed clearance to grant Spain yet another corner kick.
55'
COSTA SCORES!
Spain have scored! Diego Costa receives the ball at the top of the area, turns, and attempts to have a go on target but a perfectly timed tackle Ramin Rezaeian seemingly dispossesses the striker. The tackle is unfortunately redirected off of Costa's right leg causing it to ricochet directly into the net right passed the rooted Ali Beiranvand. Spain are up 1-0!
54'
KARIM MISS
Karim Ansarifard pounces on a loose ball in the area and hammers a volley that skims the outside of the post, but ultimately misses the target. The Iranians all thought for a split second that they had found the lead there.
54'
Goal
Diego Costa (Spain)
49'
CORNER SHOT
A corner kick taken from the left flag is flicked on at the near post and the makes its way through the area and is redirected on goal by Gerard Pique! The ball seems destined for the back of the net, but the leg of Ehsan Haji Safi deflects the shot just wide of the net! What a chance for Spain!
48'
TIME WASTING WARNING
Ali Beiranvand is awarded a goal kick hardly over a minute into the second half and the keeper clearly takes his time in taking it. Andres Cunha immediately approaches the goalie and warns him that he will not allow for any more time wasting. It would not be entirely surprising if we saw a yellow card come out soon for Beiranvand at some point this game.
46'
SECOND HALF
The second half is underway in Kazan! The teams have switch ends and it is now the Spaniards who will attack the goal located on the right end of the field. Neither side made a change at the break so we go on with the same 22 players that started the match.
45'
HALF ANALYSIS
Wow! What a statement by Iran! Spain are clearly frustrated after that opening half full of chances left and right, however Team Melli's defense stood firm to turn away every opportunity created by La Furia Roja. The underdogs will look to continue this performance, but the skill present on Spain's team seems like it will overwhelm them at some point or another. Spain, on the other hand, must keep up the pressure they asserted during the first 45 minutes, while at the same time being aware of Iran's intentions to counter attack at any occasion given.
45'
HALFTIME
The whistle blows and this game goes to the break scoreless between Iran and Spain! What a game it has been so far, will the second half be just as entertaining?
45'
SILVA SHOT DEFLECTED
David Silva earns another great look on net, this time it comes via a lovely sequence of passes just outside the area. Silva's shot takes a crazy deflection that initially seems to send directly into the upper left corner of the net, however it barely misses the far post giving Ali Beiranvand a goal kick.
42'
DAVID BLOCKED
Isco connects with a wide open David Silva on the near post with a low driven cross from the left wing! Silva takes his time to turn and fire, however two Iranian defenders close him down and in the end it is Saeid Ezatolahi who sacrifices his body to block the attempt.
38'
HAJI SAFI INJURED
The Iranian captain Ehsan Haji Safi has gone down with an injury and he limps his way of the pitch. Hopefully he will be able to continue on as the left back has been an absolute anchor for the Persian Lions thus far.
36'
IRAN ATTACK
Ramin Rezaeian is sprung down the right wing with a perfect threaded pass from the midfield! He leads Team Melli's first attack in quite some time and tries to pick out his teammates in the area, however his pass is cut out by Sergio Ramos who heads it out granting Iran their first corner of the game.
31'
SILVA MISS
The ball pings around the area following a cross from the left wing and eventually falls to David Silva with his back to goal. Silva then attempts an acrobatic leaping volley, however his effort is slightly mishit which results in the ball flying out of bounds several feet above the crossbar.
29'
IRAN CAPABLE
Even though Iran has employed an extremely defensive strategy, they certainly seem capable of stealing a point from La Roja. The typical tika-taka style of passing has not been put on display quite yet though, so anything is possible.
25'
SILVA SHOT ON GOAL
Ali Beiranvand continues to have a solid night! David Silva takes another free kick, although this time the midfielder seeks to place it on frame. The shot takes a wicked deflection, but Beiranvand reads it and makes a vital save at the near post to keep this game scoreless.
22'
RAMOS FREE KICK
Sergio Ramos blasts a free kick from distance looking to find the back of the net, but instead he only finds the top of the wall. The shot takes a very fortunate deflection for Iran which allows Ali Beiranvand ample time to locate the redirection to catch it before it bounced out for a corner kick.
19'
SILVA SHOT
David Silva is given far too much space to operate in the midfield and elects to have a go himself. The left footed inswinger is struck with real venom, however the Iranian defense is in position and the effort is blocked out of the area by Majid Hosseini.
16'
RAMOS CROSS
Sergio Ramos floats a nearly perfect ball to the far post from the left side of the midfield looking to link up with a sprinting Lucas Vazquez! The cross hangs in the air for just a moment too long, though, allowing Ali Beiranvand time to charge out to claim the pass.
13'
FREE KICK
David Silva floats another free kick into the area to set up a play exactly like the set piece that resulted in a goal for Diego Costa against Portugal. Sergio Ramos jumps up to head the ball back across the face of goal, however no one in the Iranian back line is fooled and the ball is easily cleared away from danger.
10'
COSTA MISS
David Silva delivers a cross into the area from a free kick. The ball is threaded through the mess of bodies in front and makes it to Diego Costa who attempts a flicked header at the far post, however the ball skims off the back of his head sending it well wide of the target and out for a throw in.
6'
AMIRI FOULED
Vahid Amiri draws a foul right next to the corner flag following a lovely opening attack by the Iranians! A dangerous set piece taken by Ehsan Haji Safi will follow.
4'
BEIRANVAND PUNCH
Isco lobs a ball into the box from the center of the midfield in a very direct manner. The ball floats to the left post and is met by a leaping Ali Beiranvand who delivers a firm punch to the ball as he collides with one of his defenders.
2'
INTENTIONS
The intentions of Carlos Queiroz and Team Melli are made abundantly clear just a few seconds into the match. The opening kick is taken and the Iranians immediately pulled back well within their own half in a clear defensive position. They'll hope to tread water for much of the match and then hit the Spanish on the break if at all possible.
1'

Tonight's officiating crew consists of three Uruguayans, including head referee Andres Cunha, Nicolas Taran, and Mauricio Espinosa, as well as one Chilean in Julio Bascunan. LA ROJA FORM
La Furia Roja arrived in Russia with confidence, but were immediately shaken when the RFEF sacked their manager Julen Lopetegui after he accepted an offer from Real Madrid. In his stead the federation installed Fernando Hierro and while the opening match was not perfect against their Iberian Peninsula rivals Portugal, many still believe that this Spanish team has what it takes to make a run deep into the tournament. Diego Costa particularly impressed during his 77 minutes of play as he netted goals in both the first and second half, not to mention his constant pestering of the Portuguese center back pairing of Pepe and Jose Fonte.

IRAN FORM
Iran surprised the world after taking the sole lead in Group B following the opening round of games in the first stage of the tournament. Morocco and the Persian Lions battled for a full 90 minutes last Friday in a match that looked to be destined for a scoreless draw, however a 90+5' Aziz Bouhaddouz own goal gifted Iran all three points. Team Melli's win marked the first time an Asian country had taken the maximum amount of points in a World Cup game since Japan defeated Denmark in South Africa. Can the AFC darlings who went undefeated throughout qualification continue their Cinderella tale tonight against the 2010 World Cup Champions?
