Group G Matchday 2 - Belgium vs. Tunisia
The forecasted two-horse race of Group G continues today as Belgium face Tunisia at Spartak Stadium in Moscow. Belgium come into this match riding high off a mostly convincing win over Panama, the likely last-place finisher in the group. After a disorganized and scoreless first half with few clear chances created by a squad that looks capable of creating goals in its sleep, Belgium returned to the pitch inspired and scored three times in 30 minutes to set the mood right. Dries Mertens opened the scoring, arcing in a beautiful volley just after the half began. Romelu Lukaku followed with a brace of goals that showed off the striker's gifts for composed finishing at close range, always more difficult than it looks. Thibaut Courtois did not disappoint in goal, keeping a clean sheet. Encouragingly, the dominant 3-0 final score only reflected one strong half of play for the Belgians. Same thing but the exact opposite for Tunisia, whose 2-1 loss to England could have been much worse had England finished better in front of goal. Even though they went into the end of both halves tied 1-1 with the Brits following a Kyle Walker penalty that was converted by Ferjani Sassi, Harry Kane's second half stoppage time headed winner from a corner seemed inevitable regardless of the anxiety present for the favored England side. That England took so long to find a second goal testifies to admirable defensive work from a deep-sitting Tunisia back line. However, Belgium has more experience breaking down defenses and more routes to a goal than England, with Eden Hazard making trouble between the lines and Kevin De Bruyne sitting deeper than usual with more space to create. For the favorites Belgium the double-edged sword of possessing great talent and thus great and possibly unreasonable expectations of that talent will be further sharpened as they progress in the tournament. Tunisia lacks the weight of expectation and will need help from Panama tomorrow if they have any hope of reaching the knockout stage. In the meantime, Tunisia must live for today and trust their physical defense and second-choice goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha to keep it tight at the back while striker Wahbi Khazri.tries for something on the break or magic from a set piece.
