Cairo:

Ivory Coast advanced to the semifinals of the African Cup of Nations after beating Cameroon 12-11 in the shootout following a 1-1 draw.Samuel Eto'o shot over the bar with the score level at 11-11, and Didier Drogba of Chelsea converted the next spot kick to win the match.Eto'o was shooting for the second time, after both teams scored all 11 of their penalties the first time around.High anticipationsThe highly anticipated clash at Cairo Military Stadium only came to life in extra time, after Ivory Coast had concentrated its efforts on thwarting Eto'o, who had scored five times for the Indomitable Lions.Substitute Bakary Kone broke the deadlock for the Elephants in the 92nd minute, beating Hamidou Souleymanou after Aruna Kone hit the crossbar.Albert Meyong equalised for Cameroon three minutes later, slipping the ball past goalkeeper Jean-Jacques Tizie, again moments after a volley hit the post.Few opportunitiesSaturday's game, which saw few scoring opportunities, pitted an established continental soccer power against a newcomer to the world stage.Four-time African Cup winner Cameroon twice beat Ivory Coast in World Cup qualifiers but still failed to make it to Germany, while the Elephants reached their first world finals.Three other World Cup first-timers - Angola, Togo and Ghana - were eliminated in the group stage.Forward Aruna Dindane returned to join Ivory Coast, after missing group games because of the death of his daughter.Heavily markedIvory Coast aimed to block Eto'o from the outset of this start-stop game. The FC Barcelona striker was heavily marked and repeatedly knocked to the ground until Arsenal defender Kolo Toure was booked for a late challenge in the 36th minute.Eto'o finally found some space four minutes later and nearly scored, but his effort was deflected and well saved by Tizie.Close chances Drogba and Kone both missed close-range chances in the first half, while captain Rigobert Song single-handedly kept Cameroon safe at the back amid lax defending.Song took his heading skills forward but a powerful effort in the 54th went wide. Drogba fired at goal in the 69th but Souleymanou was well placed for the save.In the dying minutes of regulation, Cameroon's Timothee Atouba sent in a late effort at long range, which was tipped over the bar by Tizie at full stretch.Lineups:Cameroon: Hamidou Souleymanou, Geremi, Rigobert Song, Andre Bikey, Timothee Atouba, Salomon Olembe (Rudolph Douala, 79), Jean Makoun, Alioum Saidou, Daniel Ngom Kome, Pierre Kouamo Webo (Albert Meyong, 33), Samuel Eto'o.Ivory Coast: Jean-Jacques Tizie, Koffiblaise Kouassi, Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue (Marc Zoro, 111), Arthur Boka, Emerse Fae, Didier Zokora, Yaya Toure (Bakary Kone, 87), Kanga Akale (Koffi Ndri, 96), Didier Drogba, Aruna Kone.
