Germany name Munich as 2020 European Championship bid city

Berlin:

The city of Munich has beaten off Berlin to be retained as the German candidate to host matches at the 2020 European Championship, the German Football Federation (DFB) announced Friday.

"It was a tough decision because Munich and Berlin have already proved their capabilities in organising events of this magnitude," DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach said.

"With Munich, we are sure of having a very good chance."

The DFB will work up until the September 12 deadline for candidacies to be placed with UEFA on the two options open to Munich for the tournament that will be played in 13 different countries.

The first of the two options comprises hosting three group matches and a last-16 or quarter-final game, and the second hosting the two semi-finals and final.

In the first case, the candidate city must have a 60,000-seater stadium and the second a stadium capable of seating at least 70,000, with Munich's Allianz Arena meeting both criteria.

The DFB will wait to see if Istanbul gets awarded the 2020 Olympic Games at the IOC's September 7 meeting before deciding whether to forward Munich's bid to host the final itself.

UEFA will announce the 13 host countries for Euro 2020 in September 2014.
