Florence : Two second half goals in the space of a minute spared Fiorentina's blushes in their UEFA Cup first round second leg match against Ukranian side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. And Bert Konterman scored in the 85th minute as Glasgow's Rangers scraped a 1-0 victory on Thursday over Anzhi Makhachkala and a place in the second round of the UEFA Cup. The match was played in the Polish capital Warsaw when Rangers, and eventually UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, decided it was too dangerous to play in Dagestan, the war-torn region that borders Chechnya. Normally a two-legged affair, the match was reduced to a single leg with the winner advancing to the second round. Fiorentina had all the possession in a dull first half, but it was Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk who came close to scoring, Konstantin Galdeanu's glancing header finding the post. But the Italian side were more positive in the second half. Enrico Chiesa had a chance but it was saved by the keeper. Dnipro responded to that chance with one of their own, but Serhiy Valiyaev could only hit the side netting. After 75 minutes, Fiorentina finally opened the scoring, with defender Daniele Adani's header finding the back of the net. A few seconds later, the Italian side had doubled their lead. Nuno Gomes passed the ball to a completely unmarked Chiesa, who slotted the ball home, as Fiorentina were up 2-0. Dnipro managed to pull one back in the 87th minute through substitute Slabyshev. But Fiorentina held on to win 2-1, and they go through by the same aggregate score after a goalless first leg.
