Buenos Aires:
Leading 2-1 in the game and 3-1 on aggregate, visitors Tigre were on course to win promotion to Argentina's top flight and consign Nueva Chicago to the second division when they were awarded an injury-time penalty.
However, they were prevented from taking the spot kick as Nueva Chicago's fans invaded the pitch.
The situation soon descended into chaos as clashes began inside the Nueva Chicago Stadium and then spilled out onto the streets outside.
Police were backed up by reinforcements firing tear gas and rubber bullets as rock-throwing fans scattered from the stadium in the Mataderos section of the capital.
According to reports, a 41-year-old man, who was not named, died after being hit on the head by a stone thrown by a supporter. At least 41 injuries and 78 arrests were also reported.
