Rotterdam:

Chelsea defeated Feyenoord by a goal to nil in a pre-season friendly game on Tuesday. Jose Mourinho's starting XI included all three of the club's big-name summer signings, former De Kuip favourite Salomon Kalou, Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko. In a first half of few clear-cut chances, Chelsea came closer to breaking the deadlock. In the 21st minute, Michael Ballack blazed the ball over the bar after being teed up by Arjen Robben. Six minutes later, Ballack was this time the provider for Robben. But the Dutchman's lob was high and wide. Great threat John Terry and Didier Drogba came on at half-time for Chelsea - replacing Wayne Bridge and Arjen Robben respectively. The English champions continued to carry the greater threat. Kalou wasted a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 47th minute, heading over the bar when it looked just as easy to score. But it was no surprise when Chelsea took the lead in the 52nd minute. It was a beautifully-crafted goal, Shevchenko putting Frank Lampard clear with a superb through-ball. The England midfielder, captain for the night, slotted the ball past Henk Timmer. Fine save In the 70th minute, Timmer denied Didier Drogba Chelsea's second with a fine save with his legs. Timmer had come on as a 58th minute substitute for starting goalkeeper Patrick Lodewijks. Deep into injury time, Feyenoord almost stole an equalising goal, as Pierre Van Hooijdonk crashed a free-kick back off the post - with Tim Vincken just failing to turn in the rebound. Over 90 minutes Chelsea were the deserved winners, and 1-0 was the final score. (AP)
