Boca, River draw 1-1

Martin Palermo's successful penalty kick in the final minute allowed nine-man Boca Juniors to draw River Plate 1-1 in Argentina's "superclasico'' on Sunday. Ernesto Farias scored for River in the 40th at Bombonera stadium. Newell's leads the Clausura with 23 points after beating Olimpo 2-0. River was second with 22, followed by Boca and Gimnasia Jujuy with 21 each after 11 rounds. The late game between Independiente and Banfield was suspended in the 78th when a stone thrown from the bleachers hit Banfield coach Carlos Leeb in the eye. Banfield was leading 2-1. Boca and national goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri was expelled in the 65th minute after illegally blocking Marcelo Gallardo. Boca defender Juan Krupoviesa was red-carded in the 82nd and River back Cristian Tula in the 85th. Wide shots Host Boca had the best of the first half without scoring. In the 13th, River 'keeper German Lux blocked a powerful header by defender Matias Silvestre, and in the 26th Palermo received a cross from Federico Insua but shot just wide. River, in its only first-half chance opened the scoring. Farias received the ball in the penalty area with his back to the goal, turned between two defenders and kicked it in over Abbondanzieri's head. Rodrigo Palacio wasted a chance to level in the 58th, and two minutes later Boca's Insua barely missed a cross from Krupoviesa. Meanwhile, River waited patiently for chances to counterattack, and Farias hit the goalpost on the hour. Penalty foul In the final minutes, Boca coach Alfio Basile sent in veteran striker Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who was fouled in the penalty area in the 90th and Palermo scored for the draw. Newell's beat host Olimpo with goals by Claudio Husain and former international Ariel Ortega. Colombian Giovanni Hernandez and Ruben Ramirez scored in Colon's 2-1 victory over Estudiantes. Gimnasia Jujuy, an early candidate for relegation and one of the surprises of the tournament, beat Argentinos Juniors 3-1 in Saturday's games. Israel Damonte and Franco Sosa with a penalty kick gave Gimnasia a 2-0 lead by halftime. Aldo Osorio, also with a penalty, halved the gap in the 55th, but a minute later Matias Oyola scored the clincher. Also, Velez Sarsfield was held to a goalless draw at home by Arsenal, and Lanus defeated Quilmes 2-0. On Friday it was, San Lorenzo 2, Gimnasia La Plata 2 and Instituto 0, Racing 1.
