Barranquilla:
An injury time equaliser from substitute Marcelo Delgado gave Argentine giants Boca Juniors a barely deserved 3-3 draw away from home against Atletico Junior of Colombia in the second round of the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday. The Metropolitano Roberto Melendez stadium in the Caribbean port of Barranquilla was the venue for the match. A partisan crowd were trying their best to play the 'twelfth man' for the home side, but were stunned into silence by Rolando Schiavi's powerful header after just seven minutes. Having lost their last three league matches, it was just the tonic the visitors needed. Defensive frailties But the defensive frailties that have dogged their season in the Argentine Clausura were soon exposed and by the time the next seven minutes were up, Boca found themselves in arrears. First, Martin Arzuaga's tenacity in chasing down a long ball created space for a cross, the ball made its way to the far post and the excellent Omar Perez, a former Boca player, popped up to score against his old club. Then Arzuaga sprung the Boca offside trap and a cool finish brought the 23 year-old striker his sixth goal of the campaign. Boca could do nothing right by this stage and it was no surprise that they conceded another before the break. On 37 minutes Arzuaga's deft touch put Emerson Acuna through on goal and an exposed Roberto Abbondanzieri was given no chance. Emerged with purpose Three-one down at half time, Boca coach Jorge Benitez, who had threatened to quit last week, must have said something special in the dressing room as his side emerged with more purpose in the second half. Rodrigo Palacio pulled a goal back on the hour as a result of a Martin Palermo flick and some generous defending on the line by Marcelo Mendez and Juan Leal. Three-two it stayed though - into injury time at the end of the match - and Junior were on the verge of claiming a notable scalp. However, Boca substitute Marcelo Delgado tried his luck with a shot from distance, Junior defender Lin Henry only partially got in the way and the ball looped over Perez into the net. It was harsh on Junior who had much the better of the game overall - now instead of having only to play for a draw in next week's second leg, they must now beat Boca on their own turf to go through to the last eight. If they take this kind of luck with them to Buenos Aires, they will have no chance at all. (AP)Topics mentioned in this article
