Kolkata:

Continuing with their association with Bengal football, German soccer giant FC Bayern Munich would return to Kolkata for a week-long training programme of their second team involving practice matches with East Bengal and Police Commissioner's XI.

Legendary World Cup winner Gerd Mueller would also accompany the side in his capacity as the Assistant Manager of FC Bayern Munich II.

"The Bayern Munich II team, which has six-seven players in the main team, will arrive here on January 15. The details are still to be chalked out. They will stay till January 22 and will play at least three practice matches - one with East Bengal and another with Police Commissioner's XI," Kaushik Moulik, Secretary of Munich-based Bengal Centre which is assisting Bayern's trip to India, said.

He added the main reason for coming to Kolkata was to showcase their skills and take football forward.

"In their second phase of the trip they will visit North Bengal and play a practice match in Siliguri. They will also visit Burdwan where their academy is coming up," Moulik said.

It was only last year that Germany's greatest goalkeeper Oliver Kahn played his swansong match at Salt Lake stadium here, while in 2005, a junior team of Bayern Munich had come here and won the IFA Shield.

In November last year, legendary German star Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who is also the chairman of FC Bayern Munich confirmed to set up a football academy in Burdwan.
