Barcelona:

The design for FC Barcelona's remodelled Camp Nou was unveiled on Saturday by the club president Joan Laporta and British architect Norman Foster.

The new-look stadium will be enveloped in a mosaic of coloured tiles, comprising of a mixture of polycarbonate and coloured glass panels.

Integrated within the tiles of the outer layer of the stadium will be special lighting elements, meaning that the external facade can be used for lighting displays.

Improved amenities include mechanical escalators to the upper levels, while a roof will be constructed to cover the seating areas.

During construction the stadium will keep functioning without major disruptions.

Club president Joan Laporta said he was happy to see Foster embracing the task of redisigning the stadium as a personal challenge.

The ceremony was preceded by the inauguration of an exhibition that commemorates the 50th anniversary of Europe's largest stadium.

The height of the stadium will reportedly be increased to allow 10,000 extra seats, taking the capacity up to 108,000.

Construction work on the new $300 million project will span a maximum of four years.
