Liverpool:

Liverpool welcomed Arsenal to Anfield in the English Premier League on Saturday, seeking their 100th Premiership win under Gerard Houllier in their 100th League season. The Premiership leaders were trying to defend their one point advantage at the top and protect an unbeaten league start at a ground where they have won only once in ten top division visits. Michael Owen cut in from the left and hit a low 18 meters effort, which the German goalkeeper touched round a post in the eighth minute. The Arsenal defence, which had looked fragile, cracked after 14 minutes when they failed to deal properly with John-Arne Riise's cross. It cannoned off an Arsenal defender and fell invitingly for Harry Kewell. The Australian international hit a clean strike for his first goal at Anfield since his move from Leeds. Arsenal had offered little in attack until the 24th minute when Jerzy Dudek was forced into a diving save to turn away a Thierry Henry shot from just outside the penalty area. A Robert Pires free kick was headed goalwards by Brazilian defender Edu - and his effort went in off Sami Hyypia and was credited an own goal by the Finn. There was a moment of concern for Liverpool and England, who meet Turkey in a crucial Euro 2004 qualifier next Saturday. In the tenth meeting between these clubs in just over three seasons, Liverpool, who had dominated for most of the game, went behind on 68 minutes. England international Steven Gerrard lost possession and Edu found Pires. The Frenchman punished the error with a stunning goal. Liverpool did not look the same side as the one on display in the first half and their best chance of salvaging a point came on 77 minutes when Cole and Pires combined to clear an El-Hadji Diouf shot off the line.
