Italian giants AC Milan began the defence of their title with a 2-1 win over Portuguese side Benfica at the San Siro stadium in Milan in a Group D encounter.
The Rossoneri took the lead in the ninth minute through a spectacular free kick from Italian international Andre Pirlo before another Italian International Filippo Inzhaghi doubled their advantage with an exceptional volley in the 24th minute.
Nuno Gomes pulled one back for Benfica in second half injury time, but it wasn't enough to deny AC Milan three points.
The defending champions will now play Scottish champions Glasgow Celtic on October 3 at Pride Park.
