An estimated 300 to 500 protesters gathered outside SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles ahead of Iran's opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, waving anti-government signs and flags while chanting slogans against the Islamic Republic. Los Angeles, home to the largest Iranian community outside Iran, became a focal point for competing emotions surrounding the match. Many Iranian Americans, including those whose families left Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, expressed excitement about seeing the national team compete on the world stage. At the same time, others voiced anger over Tehran's crackdown on protesters and concern about recent U.S. military actions in the region.The demonstrations highlighted the complex mix of national pride, political tensions, and human rights concerns surrounding Iran's participation in the tournament.
