It was a glorious night for Cristiano Ronaldo at the Stade de France on Sunday, 10 July. A night that started in tears for the Real Madrid forward after a knee injury forced him off the field in the Euro 2016 final against France, but ended up being one of the most memorable of his career following the Iberians' shock 1-0 win over the hosts.
For Ronaldo and Portugal, it was the first ever major international title. The three-time Ballon d'Or winner looked visibly emotional following the win, and was mobbed by his teammates once the full-time whistle was blown.
However, one of the most iconic moments of the night came when Ronaldo was walking down the podium with his winners medal to celebrate on the pitch.
Ronaldo came face-to-face with former manager Alex Ferguson, whom he terms as his father-figure in football. The legendary Manchester United manager had signed Ronaldo at the age of 18, and turned him into one of the best players in the world.
Ferguson, seated in the VIP area, on the stairs leading away from the podium, was congratulating Portugal players when he saw Ronaldo climbing down.
An emotional Ronaldo let out a scream of joy when he saw Ferguson, and immediately wrapped his arms around the now-retired Scotsman. It was a moment that was widely captured by cameras positioned in the area, and has now gone viral on social media.
The two United legends hugged for a few seconds before Ronaldo left to join his teammates on the field. Ferguson kept smiling and looked on like a proud father as one of his best ever proteges celebrated his greatest night in a Portugal shirt.
