Right then, that is it from this Test and the series as well, where Sri Lanka takes it 1-0. Dhananjaya de Silva, the captain of the winning side, has been handed over the trophy, and he joins his teammates to lift it up. They celebrate together and also pose for some pictures. Now, these two sides trade in the longest format with white-ball cricket. First, it will be a three-match ODI series. The first match will be played on Wednesday, 2nd July. It will start at 9 am GMT, but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
Dhananjaya de Silva, the victorious skipper of Sri Lanka, says there was a bit of difference in the two matches, the bowlers delivered in the first innings in this match, and that was key. Tells that it was a morale-booster to see the bowlers put in the effort after losing the toss. Shares Sonal Dinusha has the ability to bowl in tough conditions, and he got the breakthroughs that helped the team. Mentions that a strong bench is a very good sign for the team. On Pathum Nissanka, he says he has been performing well in all three formats and it is not surprising to see him do well.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain of Bangladesh, says that it is a very disappointing defeat. The way they played in the first game and then to play like this is not acceptable. Adds that they should have batted well in the first innings, but still backs his decision to bat first. Mentions that they always try to take the easy way while batting, and that has cost them the game. Says that Nayeem Hasan bowled really well, and there were a few other positives as well, and he believes good things are going to come in the future.
Pathum Nissanka is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant 158 off 254 and also the PLAYER OF THE SERIES (369 runs in 2 Tests). He says that he is very happy with the two hundred he scored in this series and is enjoying being the senior batter. Says that the two surfaces were quite different, but gave his all and is pleased with his performance.
Presentation Time...
The game moved significantly on the 'Moving Day', i.e, Day 3. Sri Lanka extended their dominance by piling on a big lead, with Pathum Nissanka eventually dismissed for 158 and Kusal Mendis chipping in with a brisk 84. They secured a massive first-innings lead of 211 runs. Bangladesh’s second innings unravelled quickly, with the top order dismantled by spin and pace alike. Prabath Jayasuriya and Dhananjaya de Silva shared the spoils as Bangladesh stumbled to 115/6 by stumps. With just four wickets in hand and a mountain still to climb, an innings defeat looked inevitable, and that was the case as the hosts made light work of the tail to seal the deal early on Day 4.
Sri Lanka needed just a few overs to clean up the tail on Day 2, bowling Bangladesh out for 247. What followed was a batting masterclass. Pathum Nissanka played one of his finest Test innings, showing control and poise to remain unbeaten on 146 by the close. Dinesh Chandimal supported him brilliantly with a fluent 93, as the duo stitched together a massive 194-run partnership for the second wicket. Bangladesh’s bowlers lacked bite and ideas as Sri Lanka cruised to 290/2 by stumps, already in the lead and firmly in the driver's seat.
Bangladesh opted to bat first but couldn’t seize control despite getting a decent platform. Shadman Islam held one end with a patient 46, but wickets fell regularly at the other, thanks to Sri Lanka’s pace attack led by Vishwa Fernando and debutant Sonal Dinusha. Rain caused multiple interruptions, breaking the flow of play and making it tough for batters to settle. By stumps, Bangladesh were reeling at 220/8, with only Mehidy Hasan Miraz providing some resistance lower down the order. Sri Lanka had their tails up, sensing a quick finish in the morning.
With four wickets in hand, Bangladesh might have hoped to put up some resistance, but that hope quickly faded. Once Litton Das was dismissed by an absolute beauty, the rest crumbled like a pack of cards. It took Sri Lanka less than half an hour to finish things off, thanks to a brilliant five-wicket haul from Prabath Jayasuriya, who looked back to his best on familiar Sri Lankan turf.
A thumping win for Sri Lanka! They’ve wrapped up this match by an innings and 78 runs, and with it, clinched the series as well. After the setback in Galle, the hosts have bounced back in style, reaffirming their status as one of the most formidable Test sides at home.
