That’s all from Abu Dhabi in this year’s Asia Cup, but the action continues in Dubai on Wednesday, 24th September, when India take on Bangladesh. An Indian win will see them through to the final and eliminate Sri Lanka from finals contention even before their last Super Four game, while a Bangladesh victory would keep the island nation alive. If India prevail, it would set up a virtual semi-final on Thursday, 25th September, between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The first ball of the India-Bangladesh game will be bowled at 2.30 pm GMT, with our build-up starting well in advance. Until then, take care and goodbye!
The skipper of Pakistan, Salman Agha, says that he always smiles but can’t call this a perfect game, as they lost four wickets in quick succession. Apart from that, he feels that it was nearly perfect, with the boys stepping up and performing well. Adds that the guys are putting in the hard work, doing extra on the field, and it is clearly paying off. Praises Shaheen Afridi, calling him an asset and a match-winner who has been bowling exceptionally well since the USA tour. On Hussain Talat’s all-round impact, Salman says this is exactly why they back all-rounders, and he is delighted to see him deliver. Speaking about Mohammad Nawaz, the skipper points out his immense batting potential and hopes he continues to show consistency. On Abrar Ahmed, he says that the spinner has been outstanding whenever the team is in a tough spot. He also mentions Abrar’s cheeky celebration mimicking Hasaranga, saying it was all in good spirit, and the two gelled well after the match. Salman concludes by stressing that Abrar is a rare talent and he expects greater things for him in the future.
The captain of Sri Lanka, Charith Asalanka, says that after losing 5 wickets inside the first 10 overs, it was always going to be tough. Mentions that the surface looked really good, and it was not ideal to lose those wickets in the first half. Admits that Pakistan bowled and fielded well in that phase. Shares that he is happy with the fight shown by his team. Praises Wanindu Hasaranga by calling him a superstar of white-ball cricket.
Hussain Talat is adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his impressive all-round performance. Says that the team had prepared well for the hot and humid conditions, and he made sure to take his time before playing his shots. Adds that playing in the UAE was something they had discussed in team meetings, and he is pleased to have contributed to the win. Talking about his partnership with Mohammad Nawaz, Talat shares that he was feeling drained due to the humidity and asked Nawaz to go hard at the other end, which worked perfectly. On his bowling, he mentions that he has been working closely with the bowling coach and feels that even if he delivers two good overs for his team, he considers that a success.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka went too hard, too soon. The surface was far better than the 133 they eventually ended up with, but they just did not give themselves time and kept taking risks. Reduced to 58/5 inside the 8th over, and then 80/6, they were in deep trouble. Kamindu Mendis was tasked with arresting the slide, and his partnership with Chamika Karunaratne brought some stability. Mendis’ third T20I half-century gave his bowlers something to work with. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi struck twice in the Powerplay, though it came at a cost. The middle overs were bossed by Abrar Ahmed, who conceded just 8 runs from his 4 overs while also picking up a wicket.
Seeing a partnership developing, Charith Asalanka was forced to bring Dushmantha Chameera back into the attack, and he delivered by breaking the flourishing stand. At 80/5 with 54 more needed, Mohammad Nawaz joined Hussain Talat at the crease. Sri Lanka were counting on Wanindu Hasaranga’s two remaining overs, but Nawaz attacked Hasaranga effectively, and Talat followed suit. Those two overs, which Sri Lanka had pinned their hopes on, ended up being expensive and effectively sealed the fate of the game.
In pursuit of 134, Pakistan got off to a brisk start. While Fakhar Zaman looked unsettled after taking a knock on the head, Sahibzada Farhan took charge and eased the early nerves with a flurry of boundaries. At 45/0, things seemed firmly under control before a sudden collapse saw them slip to 57/4 in no time. Given the platform laid by the openers and the modest target, there was no real scoreboard pressure. This chase was always going to be more about handling the nerves than the numbers.
A stutter along the way, but Pakistan get the job done and collect their first points in the Super Four stage. This win snaps their losing streak against the island nation in this format, having lost the previous five meetings. For Sri Lanka, it is now two defeats in a row in the Super Four stage. They are not out of finals contention just yet, but they are not far from it either. The road ahead for Charith Asalanka and his men is looking increasingly steep.

SIX! DONE AND DUSTED! Another slower delivery, full and around middle, Mohammad Nawaz stays leg side of the ball, picks the change of pace, and deposits it over the leaping long on fielder for a biggie to seal the deal. Pakistan have defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets with 12 balls to spare.

SIX! SMASHED! That should seal the game in favour of Pakistan. Hard length and a bit outside off, Mohammad Nawaz backs away, gives himself some room and slashes hard. Gets the ball to sail over the deep backward point fence for a biggie. They just need 8 runs now.
Hussain Talat replenishes himself with fluids and the physio has also made his way out. It seems like Talat is experiencing cramps. Hussain is back up on his feet and ready to resume. Dushmantha Chameera (3-0-13-1) returns to the attack.

Massive appeal for LBW from the bowler, but the umpire shakes his head. Sri Lanka don't have any reviews. Short and around leg, Talat goes back, and looks to flick it, but gets beaten on the inside edge and gets rapped on the back thigh. Meanwhile, Hussain Talat wants a quick single but is sent back, and the keeper dislodges the bails at the batting end, where Talat makes a dive to save himself. It is referred upstairs, but Talat is well in with a dive and sliding his bat just in time, as shown in the replays. Oh, the replays show that it would have been an umpire's call with the ball clipping the leg stump.

A confident shout for LBW but turned down! Maheesh Theekshana is convinced, but Charith Asalanka does not send it upstairs instantly. The skipper has a chat with the keeper before taking the review. Sliding on with the arm, fuller and on leg from around the wicket. Hussain is tempted by the flight, and he swings across the line. Gets beaten on the inside edge and gets hit on the crouched back thigh. A leg bye is taken as the ball rolls away on the off side. Nothing comes on the UltraEdge. The Ball Tracking shows that the impact is umpire's call, and the ball is missing the leg stump. Sri Lanka have burnt both their reviews.

Dushmantha Chameera To Mohammad Haris OUT!
OUT! TIMBER! Dushmantha Chameera strikes on his return to the attack! Chameera charges in from over the wicket and slips in a good-length delivery. An ordinary choice of shot from Haris as the ball is nowhere close to being full enough and he swings to belt it down the ground with a straight bat. Plants his front foot forward but the ball nips back and brushes the thigh pad before crashing into the top of the middle stump. Sri Lanka will certainly have a spring in their step after this strike. Pakistan have lost half their side for 80, needing 54 more runs.

DRINKS BREAK! It has been an entertaining tussle so far. Pakistan landed the first blow with 43 runs in the first 5 overs without losing a wicket, but the next 5 overs have seen Sri Lanka roar back with 4 quick strikes. Given the strong platform laid by the openers, it is now about batting sensibly and not letting the pressure creep in from Pakistan’s perspective. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, must keep chipping away at the wickets as that remains their best chance of defending the total. Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga still have two overs each up their sleeve, and those four overs will be absolute gold dust. Charith Asalanka has a decision to make on when to use them. Theekshana (2-0-11-2) returns to the attack.

Maheesh Theekshana To Fakhar Zaman OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! An unbelievable one-handed stunner from Wanindu Hasaranga and Fakhar Zaman is stunned. Maheesh bowls it fuller and around middle, Zaman backs away and tries to access the off side. Goes for an inside-out but ends up hitting it off the bottom part of the bat towards mid off. Wanindu moves to his right a bit and extends his right hand low to snaffle this catch just above the turf. He performs the celebration, which Abrar Ahmed does after taking a wicket. Earlier, when Wanindu Hasaranga was dismissed by Abrar, he performed Hasaranga's signature celebration and now the Sri Lankan has given it back. Pakistan are 46/2.

Maheesh Theekshana To Saim Ayub
Aggression straightaway! Full and around middle, Ayub dances down the track and drives it straight downtown. The ball hits the boot of Fakhar Zaman at the other end and parries away towards mid off. A single taken.
Saim Ayub walks out to bat.

Maheesh Theekshana To Sahibzada Farhan OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! GONE! Maheesh Theekshana provides the much-needed breakthrough, and the good cameo of Sahibzada Farhan comes to an end. Too full and wide outside off, Farhan gets down on one knee and throws his hands to reach out. Mistimes his shot off the toe end of the bat, and the ball goes flat towards mid off, where Kamindu Mendis backpedals a bit and takes it over his head. Theekshana roars in delight and celebrates the wickets with his teammates. Pakistan are 45/1, needing 89 runs more in 87 balls.

Dushmantha Chameera To Sahibzada Farhan
Good effort in the deep! Chameera bashes the hard length, over middle. Farhan swings it away on the leg side and gets it high on the bat. The ball plugs in the vacant deep mid-wicket region. Kamindu Mendis sprints to his left in the deep and as he flicks the ball away from the fence, the ball catches his trailing leg and drops in front of the boundary cushions. It is mopped up by the fielder converging from the inner circle. Three runs taken.

Dushmantha Chameera To Sahibzada Farhan
Big swing and a miss! On a good length, on off and middle. Sahibzada Farhan clears the front leg and has a hack across the line. Fails to connect and the ball goes over the stumps.
Change of ends for Dushmantha Chameera. Also, Sri Lanka had scored 36 runs after the first four overs, but they had lost two wickets, which could be key in this big contest.

Maheesh Theekshana To Fakhar Zaman
STUMPING CHANCE MISSED! Not an easy one, but Sri Lanka need to convert every chance that comes their way if they want to defend 133! This is fired in by Theekshana, around the leg stump. Fakhar skips down the track and ends up getting too close to the ball. Gets beaten on the outside edge, and the ball bounces once after going past him and in front of the keeper. Kusal Mendis fails to get up, and the ball gets past his right thigh and races away.

Nuwan Thushara To Sahibzada Farhan
SIX! All the way! This is on a length, a bit of away curve, on off. Due to Nuwan's slingy action, the ball does not rise as much and stays a bit low. Farhan holds his shape and lofts it over mid on for a six.
The physio is out again as Fakhar Zaman doesn't seem 100 per cent and appears to be struggling to sight the ball properly. There have been talks between him and the physio, and Zaman has decided to stay for now.

Dushmantha Chameera To Fakhar Zaman
FOUR! Just over! On a back of a length, on middle. Zaman is unable to free his arms in the way he would have wanted, ideally. Swings like a rusty gate but gets enough bat to clear the leaping mid-wicket fielder for a boundary.

Dushmantha Chameera To Fakhar Zaman
Beaten! This is served at 143.4 kph, fuller in length. Fakhar is all at sea with his footwork. Just hangs his bat out with no real conviction and the ball nips back to go past the inside edge.
The physio is out, and a mandatory concussion test is going on with Fakhar Zaman, who got hit on his helmet on the previous delivery. Seems a big blow, and now, Zaman is taking some refreshment drinks. A blow is pointed by Zaman on his forehead, as it seems there is a cut or something off the grills of the helmet. There is a change of helmet for him, and it looks like a good sign as Fakhar is up on his feet and feels well enough to continue further.

Dushmantha Chameera To Fakhar Zaman
Serious heat from Dushmantha Chameera! Oh, hang on, Sri Lanka have taken the review. It lobbed off the helmet to cover and it was taken by the fielder who charged in and caught it whilst diving. It does not look like it has made any contact with the bat. Let's see. Chameera bends his back and goes short at the bodyline of the batter. The ball kisses off the deck and goes over the bat on the attempted pull from Fakhar. The ball pings the helmet before going towards cover but the UltraEdge shows no bat. Sri Lanka lose an early review.

Nuwan Thushara To Fakhar Zaman
It would have been interesting had the throw hit! Fuller and drifting onto the pads. Fakhar brings his wrists into play and clips it to the right of deep backward square leg. Wanindu Hasaranga is quick across the turf in the deep and fires in a throw on the bounce towards the bowling end. Farhan seemed to be struggling to make his ground but surprisingly, there is no one up to the stumps at the bowling end to collect the throw. It is backed up by a couple of fielders converging from the off side.
