Englandwon the toss and elected to field
Right then, that is it from this action-packed Day 1 of the final Test. With just one wicket left, New Zealand will hope that Mitchell Santner can add as many runs as possible while England will want to wrap things up quickly. Day 2 will begin at 10 pm GMT, but you can join us early for all the build-up. Cheers!
England roared back in the final session, turning the game on its head with sharp bowling and smart tactics. Kane Williamson’s dismissal by Matthew Potts, albeit with some luck, triggered a Kiwi collapse from 185/3 to 212/6, as the middle order faltered under pressure. England’s bowlers - Potts, Brydon Carse, Gus Atkinson, and Ben Stokes - executed their plans brilliantly, forcing poor shot selections from the hosts. However, Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry steadied the ship with a gritty 41-run stand before Tim Southee’s fireworks, including three towering sixes, pushed New Zealand past 300. Santner capped off the day in style with a big hit to reach his fifty, setting up a thrilling Day 2!
In the second session, England struck back with key wickets, but New Zealand kept the scoreboard ticking, heading into Tea in a strong position. Will Young fell early after Lunch, while skipper Tom Latham crafted a classy 63 before being dismissed, despite Ben Duckett dropping him twice earlier. Kane Williamson brought flair with crisp boundaries, but a late strike from Brydon Carse removed Rachin Ravindra just before Tea, halting the hosts' momentum. Gus Atkinson and Matthew Potts toiled hard for breakthroughs, but England struggled to contain the runs.
New Zealand dominated the morning session of the final Test, racing to 93/0 in 28 overs after being sent into bat by Ben Stokes. Captain Tom Latham and Will Young, playing his first match of the series, batted with remarkable composure, leaving England’s bowlers frustrated. They left the good balls, punished the loose ones, and built a solid opening stand, setting a commanding tone. England’s bowlers struggled to find rhythm despite the pitch offering extra bounce, with edges falling short and luck favoring the visitors.
SESSION SUMMARY - 143 runs and 6 wickets in 30 overs! A gripping opening day of Test cricket comes to an end! The pendulum shifted both ways but at the moment, this game hangs in the balance. We saw New Zealand dominate at first, but then England fought back excellently to make a game out of this one. However, the Kiwis had the final say as they smashed 76 runs in the last 8 overs of the day. With both sides exchanging hard blows, we are surely in for some thrilling moments in this match.

OUT! CAUGHT! The fireworks from Tim Southee finally come to an end! Bowled on a length, on middle. Tim Southee makes room, steps out and tries to smack it over onto the leg side, but just manages to undercut it straight up in the sky as it keeps getting big on him. Brydon Carse runs in from mid off and settles underneath the swirling ball but swallows it easily in the end. Southee won't be getting to 100 Test sixes in this inning, but he walks back after a fiery 23 off just 10, entertaining the crowd to the fullest.

Ben Stokes To Matt Henry OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Harry Brook takes an amazing catch at deep fine! Matt Henry departs! Ben Stokes again goes for a short ball after getting hit for a six in the over. He bowls at chest height and Matt Henry shuffles across and hooks it in an unprecedented situation behind the wickets without much control. The ball goes in the air towards the fielder at deep fine. Harry Brook runs to his left and grabs it well, but realises he is going over the ropes, so he flicks it in the air. He then hops inside and pouches it safely again to complete the catch. The replay confirms it is a clean catch and the Kiwis are now eight down.

Brydon Carse To Tom Blundell OUT!
OUT! TAKEN! Brydon Carse has the last laugh here! The plan works once again for England and the Kiwis are just falling apart here. This one is full and well outside off, inviting the batter to have a go at it. Just like Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips, Tom Blundell chases after it. He sits on one knee and reaches out for it to carve it away but fails to get the elevation. It goes aerailly towards cover-point where Jacob Bethell leaps up and takes a good catch. Blundell goes back for 21 off 29 and New Zealand are 231/7!

Drinks! England have made a fine comeback in this game picking up three wickets in the first hour or so of this final session. They will want to break the last recognised batting pair and then quickly wrap things up ideally under 300. New Zealand have suffered a bit of a collapse here and questions need to be asked for some of the shot selections. Now, Tom Blundell has all the responsibility to negotiate the innings with the lower middle order and get the Kiwis to a good total. Also, Brydon Carse to bowl after the break.

We are back for the final session! The players are already out in the middle now. Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell are the two batters for New Zealand. Gus Atkinson to bowl the first over after Tea. Let's go...
... DAY 1, SESSION 3 ...
England stuck with the four seamers and did not turn to Shoaib Bashir's turn. It worked for them but they could not contain the runs. It was Gus Atkinson who got them the first breakthrough but they had to toil very hard after that until Matthew Potts strangled Tom Latham down the leg side. Ben Duckett was a relieved man as he dropped him twice once on 12 and then on 53, but both were difficult chances. Just as the hosts were taking control again, Brydon Carse got rid of the in-form Rachin Ravindra just before the end of the session. The visitors will look to make early inroads in the next session and test the Kiwi middle order. Join us at 3 am GMT to catch all the exciting action of the last session.
Will Young couldn’t add to his Lunch score, falling soon after New Zealand crossed the 100-run mark. However, skipper Tom Latham continued to lead the charge in his usual composed style. Kane Williamson came in next and injected momentum with a counter-attacking approach, hitting some crisp early boundaries. Latham brought up a fluent fifty but was dismissed for 63. Rachin Ravindra then joined Williamson, and the pair looked assured at the crease, combining solid defense with calculated aggression. But a loose shot from Ravindra cost him his wicket at the stroke of Tea giving the visitors an opening going into the last session.
SESSION SUMMARY - 79 runs and 3 wickets in 25 overs! Probably a shared session! England managed to pick up a few crucial wickets, but New Zealand kept the runs flowing at a steady pace. As the players head into the Tea break, the hosts find themselves in a strong position, setting the stage for an intriguing final session.

Brydon Carse bowls a hard length, outside off, angles away from over the wicket. Rachin Ravindra pokes at it away from his body and the extra bounce catches the outside edge. It flies towards gully where Ben Duckett stays low and takes it with ease, just a regulation catch for him. The TV umpire is checking for a legal ball. The replay shows that Brydon Carse lands his foot just on the line. It is very close and the crowd thinks that he has overstepped, but the umpire is convinced that there is some part behind it and a third down for New Zealand. A big blow for the Kiwis!

Drinks! New Zealand did lose Will Young but Kane Williamson has come in and looked proactive from the start. He is putting away the loose delivered while Tom Latham is looking solid as ever and will want to convert his fifty into something big here. England have once again been inconsistent and they need to come up with some different plans or else the hosts could actually bat them out of the game. We are back for the second session! The players are just waiting outside the ropes and now they make their way out to the middle. Will Young and Tom Latham will resume batting for New Zealand. England players in a huddle where Ben Stokes is giving a last-minute pep talk. It will be Gus Atkinson to start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...
... DAY 1, SESSION 2 ...
England’s bowlers struggled to maintain consistent lines and lengths in their quest for quick breakthroughs. A few edges created moments of hope, but luck favored New Zealand. The pitch offers some extra bounce, with the ball occasionally zipping through, but England’s bowlers will need to use the grass more effectively and focus on tighter areas to trouble the batters. The next session promises to be exciting. Can New Zealand continue to build on this solid foundation and post a big first-innings total? Or will England regroup and strike back to halt their progress? Join us after Lunch at 12.40 AM GMT to find out.
Captain Tom Latham and opener Will Young, playing his first match of the series, showed great discipline at the crease. They left the good deliveries and capitalized on loose ones, finding the boundary when opportunities arose. Latham remains unbeaten on 36 runs, while Young is not out at 42 runs, guiding New Zealand to a strong start.
SESSION SUMMARY - 93 runs and 0 wickets in 28 overs! New Zealand dominated the morning session of the final Test after being sent into bat by England’s skipper Ben Stokes, who won the toss and opted to bowl first. The visitors will enjoy a well-earned Lunch, reaching 93 runs without losing a wicket in 28 overs.

Drinks! The opening pair of New Zealand have survived the first hour of a Test match after a long time. In fact, this is their best partnership in the last ten innings and both Tom Latham and Will Young will look to continue like this further. England have bowled well and extracted some movement from the pitch and asked a few tough questions as well but without any reward. There was that Ben Duckett drop but other than that, no clear-cut chances have been created. With both teams fighting hard, we are in for an exciting phase of cricket.

Done with the pre-match formalities! A big cheer from the crowd for Tim Southee as he walks off and it is the England players who are taking up their respective field positions. Tom Latham and Will Young are the two openers for New Zealand. Matthew Potts has the new red cherry in his hand and is raring to go. Let's play...
We are moments away from the start but before that, the man of the moment, Tim Southee, receives a guard of honor as this will be his last ever Test match. He is carrying his daughter onto the field and it is an emotional moment as the whole crowd is standing on their feet. Now, the players from both sides line up for their respective national anthems. It will be England's first followed by the national anthem of New Zealand.
Tim Southee is up for a quick chat. He says that any Test match you play for New Zealand is special. Adds Hamilton has been a ground where he played a lot of his cricket and wants to finish on a high and a perfect place to end his career. Mentions that he wants to end on a positive note. Adds that he has played a 100-odd Test matches and has made special friendships. Concludes by saying that he always enjoyed watching the game as a fan and looking forward to it.
PITCH REPORT - The pitch at Seddon Park looks brown with a tinge of green in there. There is a normal breeze flowing across the ground. It will get hotter as the days progress and will flatten out in the latter stages of the game and will become more and more conducive for spin.
Tom Latham, the New Zealand captain says that it looks like a decent surface and there is a lot of grass and he is happy to bat first as he wants to post a big score. Adds that there is an opportunity to do good in this final Test for the team and end off on a high. Informs that there are two changes in the team.
Ben Stokes, the skipper of England says that when the team came to the ground this morning, there wasn't a cloud in the sky but it seems there are some clouds looming around. Further mentions that Potts is added in the pace battery in place of Chris Woakes. Adds that they have played some really good cricket throughout the series but New Zealand never give up easily. Concludes by saying that they are going to go about their game the same way they have throughout the series.
New Zealand (Playing XI) - Tom Latham (C), Will Young (In place of Devon Conway), Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (WK), Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner (In place of Nathan Smith), Matt Henry, Tim Southee, William O'Rourke.
England (Playing XI) - Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope (WK), Ben Stokes (C), Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts (In place of Chris Woakes), Shoaib Bashir.
TOSS - Tom Latham flips the coin in the air and Ben Stokes calls it correctly. England have elected to BOWL first.
England’s record in Hamilton, however, is less inspiring, having not won a Test here for a very long time. Stay tuned as the teams battle for supremacy in what promises to be a gripping five days of cricket! The weather forecast predicts clear skies with temperatures hovering around 22 degrees, ideal for uninterrupted cricket. With both captains keen to make the right call at the toss, a hard pitch full of green grass suggests that batting first might not be the best approach, since early movement with the new ball could pose a challenge. Compared to day one, there are many more predictions of rain interruptions for day three. The action on Day 1 is not far away. Toss and team news in a bit.
England, under Ben Stokes’ dynamic leadership, continues to embrace its aggressive 'Bazball' philosophy, which has seen them dominate batting lineups and pile up runs at a brisk rate. Harry Brook’s sensational form, amassing more than 300 runs in the series, has been a key factor in England's batting strength. On the bowling front, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse have been standout performers, collectively claiming 24 wickets in the series. With Matthew Potts replacing Chris Woakes in the pace battery to bring in sheer pace, they will have an impeccable mixture of pace and control in the mix, as England’s attack remains a potent threat. They may consider Shoaib Bashir to exploit spin-friendly conditions later in the match as the grass dries out after being baked for the first two days.
Team news suggests a possible inclusion of Will Young to bolster the batting department as Devon Conway has been given time off for personal reasons. With the pitch expected to deteriorate as the game progresses, the hosts have a better track record at this venue, having not lost a Test since 2012, showing that this might be the perfect venue to secure a win in this series and provide senior statesman, Tim Southee with a winning send-off.
New Zealand enters the contest brimming with confidence after a gritty fightback in the second Test, as the danger of losing the series 3-0 hangs over them. Kane Williamson still remains the backbone of their batting lineup, given his track record at home and being amongst the most technically sound batters in the lineup, averaging 94.26 at the ground, with six hundreds, including a career-best 251 against the West Indies. The Kiwis also rely heavily on pacers William O'Rourke and Matt Henry, who have taken crucial wickets for the team at important moments in this series. Tim Southee’s record at Seddon Park has been stellar in recent appearances at the venue.
Hello, and welcome to day one of the third Test match between New Zealand and England in what promises to be another thrilling chapter of this captivating series. Although England have already taken the series in the second Test match, it is still expected to be an intense battle. The action unfolds here at Seddon Park in Hamilton, over the course of five days, a ground known for favouring stroke players but also offering assistance to bowlers with its grassy surface early on.
... MATCH DAY ...
After two commanding victories to secure the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, England head into the final clash against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton, aiming for a clean sweep. For New Zealand, it’s a chance to salvage pride and end their 2024 red-ball campaign on a more positive note, but the odds are stacked against them after England’s dominant displays. To add to New Zealand’s challenges, they will be without Devon Conway, who is unavailable for this game ahead of the birth of his first child. Mark Chapman or Will Young is likely to slot into the XI. While there have been moments of promise for the Kiwis, they’ve failed to sustain momentum and capitalize on key phases. Tom Latham and Kane Williamson will need to anchor the batting lineup, especially in Conway’s absence, while the bowling unit, led by Tim Southee and William O'Rourke, must rediscover its edge. A flat pitch could prompt the inclusion of Mitchell Santner to add variety to the attack. For England, their aggressive brand of cricket continues to set the tone, leaving New Zealand unable to keep pace. Harry Brook has been a standout, recently overtaking Joe Root to become the world’s top-ranked Test batter. With Ben Duckett, Ben Stokes and Jacob Bethell also in fine form, England’s batting unit looks formidable. On the bowling front, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson have provided excellent support to Chris Woakes, making it a well-rounded attack firing on all cylinders. England might consider some squad rotations, given the series is already won, while New Zealand will be desperate to turn things around and avoid a whitewash in front of their home crowd. It’s a contest of pride versus dominance as both teams gear up for the final battle.
