Inn Break
With this, we wrap up this southern derby. Now then, the Indian Premier League 2025 is heading to its second weekend, and we have got another thrilling contest coming up next. The lavish Narendra Modi Stadium of Ahmedabad will light up once again, as the Gujarat Titans host Mumbai Indians in Match number 9. Both teams are coming off losing their first matches. That game will be played on Saturday, 29th March and the first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). But do make sure you all join us for the pre-match analysis and an exciting build up an hour earlier. Till then, we take your leave from this match centre. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. Take care, until next time!
An off day for CSK then. But rather, the team would think it is better to have one early in the tournament rather than in the latter stages. However, there’s a lot for CSK to ponder upon before their next game, and batting approach is surely one of those areas. They also made a few fielding errors, for instance, dropping Rajat Patidar twice which proved too costly for them. RCB, on the other hand, stay crowned at the top with four points, and a very healthy net run rate.
The captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajat Patidar, is adjudged the PLAYER OF THE MATCH. He says that they posted a good total on this surface as the was stopping a bit. Adds that it was difficult to find the fence. He shares that it was special to play at Chepauk against CSK and an amazing experience performing in front of such a passionate crowd. Mentions that they were aiming for 200 and knew it wouldn’t be easy to chase. His focus was on maximizing every over while he was at the crease. He notes that the track offered assistance to the spinners and lauds Liam Livingstone for the way he bowled. He feels the bowling in Powerplay by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood was game-changing.
The Presentation Ceremony...
Josh Hazlewood of Royal Challengers Bengaluru is up for a chat now. Starts by saying that the ball is coming out nicely and he is feeling fresh and nice. He says it was a great display of pace and spin in unison. Thinks it was a two-paced wicket, with the fuller-length deliveries a bit easier to work with. Adds that hitting that 8-10 meter length worked in their favor. Mentions that the energy was great, coupled with a top effort in the fielding department, which really helps to lift the bowlers. Says that any time you get injured, you feel down, but he used that time wisely by doing fitness regularly. On Yash Dayal, he mentions that having a left-armer is crucial and appreciates him for having a good change of pace.
The captain of Chennai Super Kings, Ruturaj Gaikwad, feels that 170 was a par score on this wicket and admits that their batting wasn’t up to the mark. He acknowledges that lapses in the field cost them crucial runs and that the pitch got slower and stickier as the game progressed. He mentions that at times, teams have a target score in mind, but the extra 20 runs conceded made a big difference. With three world-class spinners in the team, he stresses the importance of holding onto chances. Looking ahead, he notes the long flight to Guwahati and emphasizes the need to turn up mentally prepared. He concludes by stating that while off days with bat and ball are inevitable in a tournament like the IPL, fielding must improve.
Earlier in the game, CSK invited RCB to bat, and the match quickly turned into a thrilling rollercoaster! Phil Salt came out blazing, taking on the new ball with infectious energy, while Kohli initially looked like he was finding his feet. MS Dhoni, sharp as ever, pulled off a lightning-quick stumping that changed the game's momentum. The spinners did their job, keeping things tight, but Kohli and Patidar gradually built a partnership that started to look dangerous. Patidar, living on the edge with a couple of dropped chances, kept the scoreboard ticking and smashed a solid fifty. After a brief wobble, Tim David swooped in like a hero, launching three massive sixes in the final over that propelled RCB to an impressive 196. For CSK, Noor Ahmad was the standout bowler with a three-wicket haul, while Matheesha Pathirana picked two of his own.
In a desperate bid to resurrect their crumbling chase, Shivam Dube launched a few powerful strikes, offering momentary sparks of hope for CSK. However, the momentum remained frustratingly out of reach, with the team struggling to gain any significant ground. The final nail in the coffin came when both Dube and Rachin Ravindra fell in a single over to Yash Dayal, leaving CSK staring at an insurmountable target. There was something to cheer for the crowd as they did get to see MS Dhoni come out to bat, who smashed a couple of biggies in the last over, along with Jadeja who, too, hit a few lusty blows, but unfortunately, it wasn’t the day to be for CSK in the end.
Running through unfamiliar territories, and also losing Sam Curran on the way, Shivam Dube joined Rachin Ravindra to bail CSK out of the rut, but they were just a tinge above run-a-ball, around the halfway stage. With the asking rate climbing over 12s, the RCB spinners further put the brakes on scoring. There was a visible hold and grip for the spinners as there was minimal dew, which multiplied CSK’s struggles with them being 65/4 at the halfway stage, versus RCB’s 93/2 at the same stage.
Chasing a big total of 197, CSK needed a strong start against the new ball, but they were pegged back badly as they lost three big wickets inside the Powerplay, including the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad on a duck. The duo of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar utilised the new ball to perfection and extracted some extra bounce, which troubled the batters. As a result, CSK were crawling at the Powerplay, being 28/3.
Not a competitive southern derby by any means as millions would have expected, but RCB will take it gleefully as they win two on the bounce. Their tournament has started with a bang with two big wins against two big opponents. Also, to be noted, both wins have come in away games, breaching the opposition’s fortresses. First defeating KKR in Eden Gardens, and now, crushing CSK at their own backyard on their way. A word of appreciation for Rajat Patidar, the skipper as well. He has shown a brave character in both games and maybe, this can turn their fortunes around? Still early days though.
FORTRESS CHEPAUK HAS BEEN BREACHED! In the hallowed cauldron of the MA Chidambaram Stadium, RCB has finally exorcised their 17-year demons, shattering a haunting streak with a performance that was nothing short of total domination. This is easily one of RCB’s most famous wins in recent times, including the one at Chinnaswamy last year, where they knocked the same opposition out of the playoff race. Also, this is CSK's biggest defeat in Chennai in the IPL, in terms of runs, against any opposition.

STRATEGIC BREAK! A double strike from Yash Dayal has put RCB firmly in control as they edge closer to ending their long wait for a win against CSK at Chepauk. The required run rate has skyrocketed to 16.57, making this an uphill task for the hosts. At this stage, realistically, it’s more about reducing the margin of defeat than anything else. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been clinical with the ball so far and are well on course to make it two wins in two.

STRATEGIC BREAK. Well, things have transformed from bad to worse for CSK with Sam Curran being the latest casualty for the men in yellow. RCB are all over the home side, and are sniffing a big win already. Four batters, all out on single digit scores, just tells you how badly the CSK batters have struggled, first against the new ball and now, with the spinners putting the squeeze on. Rachin Ravindra is fighting a lone battle out there but is running out of partners thick and fast. It's a dual challenge for CSK as they just cannot afford to slow down further. They are already around run-a-ball and still need 145 runs off 67 balls. To tackle the challenge, CSK have summoned Shivam Dube as their Impact Substitute in place of Matheesha Pathirana. Dube is in at number 6.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar To Deepak Hooda OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! On a good length, shaping away from the right-hander, just around off, Deepak Hooda stays on the back foot and tries to push it away, but plays inside the line and the ball passes the outside edge, on the way to the keeper. An appeal for caught behind from Jitesh Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, but not entertained by the umpire. Rajat Patidar trusts his men, and straightaway signals the 'T' to go upstairs. UltraEdge comes up and shows a faint spike as the ball passes close to the outside edge. An excellent review by RCB! Deepak Hooda departs on 4 (9) and things are getting really worrisome for CSK as they are 26/3.

FOUR! Nicely placed! Hits the deck hard, does Josh Hazlewood, around off, Rachin Ravindra gets on top of the ball, opens the bat face and places it between cover and point for a cracking boundary.
Tim David is mic’d up for a chat with the broadcasters. He says it was nice to get a few out of the middle and jokingly adds that he swung twice at the slower ball from Sam Curran but still missed. He highlights the importance of mixing up the pace, stressing that slower deliveries need to be bowled into the wicket rather than floated up. Acknowledges that the conditions here are very different from back home and emphasizes that a smooth swing and holding his base are key for him. David mentions that the talk was about needing to make use of the conditions and replicate what worked for CSK with the ball.

Josh Hazlewood To Ruturaj Gaikwad OUT!
OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! CSK under early trouble as they lose their skipper on a four-ball duck! RCB are thrilled to bits, and why not? Hoff keeps banging the ball on that hard length, and again, gets that extra bit of bounce off the surface as the ball skids through and lifts up on the batter. Ruturaj Gaikwad shapes to pull, goes through, but hits it off the higher part of the bat. Doesn't get the distance and the ball sails to the deep square leg region. The substitute fielder, Manoj Bhandage, runs across to his left and takes a fine catch.
